Pipe Tightening

I just recently rebuild my Blasty engine and the mechanic said Id have to re-tighten the pipe bolts. After 2 months or so, I noticed that my pipe is leaky at the base fitting and the nuts aren't tightened all the way. It also has had an effect on the sound quality and my chamber is kinda rattly. So I was wondering if the bolts need tightened to a certain torque setting or something? Also, what would it have hurt from riding it like this? Thanks.
 
your pipe shouldn't be bolted to the motor. there is an exhaust flange bolted then depending on the pipe it either just slides onto the flange or it is held by a spring to the flange. I personally have taken apart a stock ehaust flange oring and used the lead portion of it to wrap around the flange then i shoved the pipe over it and that sealed everything up. copper rtv can melt
 
Yeah its a Vito's Fat Bastard pipe. I think it may just slide on but there are nuts that when you tighten them the pipe gets pushed up to the head closer. So I found out that I didnt need to torque it so thanks for the help. By the way, anyone looking for a sweet sounding pipe, the Fat Bastard sounds pretty mean on mine.

Technically, Yamaha specifies a torque for just about every fastener on the bike. Without bothering to look it up, 18lbs sounds about right. Personally, for most things I just pull on the wrench, make an appropriate sound effect, and call it good.

The reason your mechanic wanted you to check them after awhile is that the expansion and contraction cycles tend to make things come loose, especially exhaust nuts.
