Pipe/Port questions

So, I'm a big noob to this atv modding, and does porting mean boreing it by making the cylinder inside bigger? if so, how much does it cost to make it a 240cc or whatever the increments are? Another thing, is what pipe will give me the most more performance(fatty,silencer,etc.)? again, don't get mad at me for being a noob

Porting is making the intake and exhaust ports bigger for more fuel/air flow, boring is making the cylender bigger and the only way to get 240cc is to get a big bore kit, you can't bore the stock sleeve over 200cc (its 195cc now)

actually.... porting is modifying the flow of a cylinder. its the equivalent of a cam in a 4stroke. it is changing the duration of intake exhaust and transfers. how long its open and when they close. more duration will equal a powerband in a higher rpm range and the pipe and carb u choose should compliment this.
and u can broe a stock cylinder for a 240, however you will have to buy a 240 sleeve( that is the steel cylinder that presses into the aluminum cylinder)bore the cylinder and press in the larger sleeve and then the port work is done because the ports will not match up. the stock castings will not match up with the ports in the aluminum cylinder. u will get the same if not more out of a 200cc ported with correct carb and pipe than u will with 240cc unported. best chice 240cc ported piped and carb to match.

I'm thinkin of gettin a port and polish done to my blaster. I'm a noob aswell so dont blame me. I have a dg pipe on so i was wondering if i asked my mechanic to do a port and polish would he understand. I'm from ireland and i was thinkin that they might use different names for it. What would be the best thing for me to do to get my blaster ready for the track?

send it to a reputable engine builder. and yes as far as i know it would be called the samething.more porting than polishing. i think only the exhaust port is polished to keep carbon build up from sticking. i dont think there is mush gained from a polished intake because i dont think the fuel atomizes as well in such a short intake. REPUTABLE BUILDER is the key word. im sure one will chime in!

I would not let a mechanic do the porting unless he is very knowledgeable in that area and has all of the equipment necessary to do the job right. The tooling is very expensive to modify the ports. The transfer ports will need to be modified to get the duration correct and widened as well. Do a little research on your own before letting someone mod the ports. The cylinder head design is critical as well,

Porting is one of the only things that the home mechanic should not be doing on his/her own.

biotch is right, there's more to porting than just the intake and exhaust. there's a lot of sh*t goin on in a 2stroke cylinder and taking it to the wrong mech for work can be severely detrimental. ALWAYS use someone who knows their numbers and has experience on the trail and on the dyno.
kennedy_power is the most 2stroke engine smart dude i've ever talked to. he knows his sh*t. i highly recommend him.
also remember that the pipe needs to match the port job.

squeaklad, we do performance engine work and offer international shipping. As I'm sure many other builders offer international shipping too. Your first matter of business should honestly be selecting a more efficient pipe than the DG. They are not one of the best pipes. Be carefull and study first, the pipe will be the determining factor that all other engine mods are based on...select one that suits your riding style.

i know what your tryin to say yes, postage costs are always nearly the price pf whatever i am trying to send away or tryin to buy, this is what is holding me back from mod my blaster. your saying if i am to do it i might aswell do it right and buy a proper pipe and this over here in Ireland is a crazy price then the price of the porting would be crazy as well because i dont think that there is any mech's over here that could do it for me

True, the shipping will be possibly the largest part of the cost. We use the USPS to get the best possible shipping rates for our customers...Recently shipped a set of paddles front/rear to Dubai, cost @$365 to get them there. Shipping on the pipe and cylinder would be quite a bit less due to the weight.

that wouldnt matter to the people in Dubai one bit sure are they not all loaded? but just the price of the postage would be about the same. mind i have to pay postage to get it there then pay you for the work and then pay for the postage back again. the price would be crazy
