Old Blaster Not Running Up to Speed

I’ve got an ’89 blaster that I bought new. It was my wife’s ride and she rode it for a few years. Since about ’94 it’s only been ridden 2-3 times, maybe 1-2 hrs total.
My son has been wanting to ride it, so I took it to my local Yamaha dealer and explained to them that it had been sitting for 15+ yrs. They cleaned the carb, replaced the TORS, along with the oils, filter, plug…
Anyway, I got it home and let it warm up and was standing there listening to it idle, then all of a sudden the motor rev’d to full throttle, had to hit the kill switch. I tried it a few more times and each time the engine would over rev. Took it back to the shop and they fixed it, said that the throttle was somehow hanging WOT. I took it out for a test run and the first thing that I noticed is that it wont idle, and it’s only getting about half the power that it should have. I can barely get it into 4th gear without stalling. I hate to have to keep taking it back to the shop, hopefully it’s just a carb adjustment. I’m concerned that given it’s age, it might need more that just carb work. I did run some sea foam through it, but that didn’t seem to help the lack of power. Any ideas of what else I might need to do to this thing would be appreciated.
 
It's a shame you paid to have the tors fixed, because it's supposed to prevent over rev if throttle hangs. Search around here for help to locate tors box (where located on quad) and disconnect it to see if that cures problem.

Clean all cables well and lubricate them, especially throttle, time may not have been kind to it. If gisconnecting tors doesn't fix problem post back up. Or even if it does.

i would do a leakdown test sounds like you may have an air leak as well... when those engines sit so long without any oil hitting them they dry up bad and may start to leak. id do a compression test and a leakdown test just to make sure everything is ok

I used to ride a Warrior, but I remember having a blast on this Blaster!
I wish I had done a little research on the tors, %#@$& thing cost me $325!!
Definitely going to have the engine checked out. I’m already into this project for $800 (to late to turn back now!). It’s been garage kept, and my wife wasn’t exactly hard on it. It’s got a FMF pipe, air filter upgrade, turf tamers, it still has original front tires, so they need replaced, turf tamers still look okay, I installed a new chain, and foam filter. One thing that I know nothing about are reeds. Do I need to tell the shop to check them, and/or should they know to check them?? Thinking about maybe trying another Yamaha shop.
 
y dont you check some of this stuff yourself... its fairly easy and we can help walk you through it... that way you save some money for the parts to fix it instead of fattening someone elses pockets
 
sounds to me like your going to be into it a little more then you think mostly because your going to be taking it back to a shop to work on it. i also agree with ACESEESAWTOOTH^^^ those seals have dried out (mainly the stator side Crank seal). but thats just the beginning, if it were mine i would replace both crank seals, reeds, reed gaskets and put in a carb kit if the dealer didnt do that already. this is also a recomendation, get rid of that oil injection and use pre mix. and do what is called a leak down test.

Glad that I found this website! I am feeling like I’m wasting time and $$ going back to this particular shop. I’ve cleaned this carb myself a few times and each time the motor would run just fine, but the last time was about 5 yrs ago, and I got it to start, but it wouldn’t idle at all. That’s why I figured I’d take it to a dealer to be worked on. I even told them that I prefer that they just replace the carb, but they assured me that they could clean it and get it working. Now I’ve paid over $500 for carb/tors and it still wont idle.
Aside from the engine, could the reeds be causing the engine not to run up to speed? When that tors first malfunctioned and caused the engine to rev way up, the engine definitely sounded like it had full power, in fact it sounded like it was about to implode before I could hit the kill switch. I’m kind of wondering if my friends at the shop didn’t maybe damage the engine by letting it run wide open while troubleshooting. Either way, I’m prepared to do some sort of rebuild if that’s required.
 
when my reeds went bad they looked good but i just replaced em to be sure it caused me to bog when i got on it and when i got up to high rpm's it would run but just like crap and i had cleaned the carb about 3 diff times but didnt work. the reeds are really cheap i would try it
 
Do I have to completely remove the carb to replace the reeds?
Also, where’s a good place to order aftermarket parts? I used to live near Chaparral Cycles, loved that place.
 
ebay ftw. also... there are alot of things that are easy to do yourself. even for the most novice person. if you have any questions you can just ask.
 
Get yourself a Clymers repair manual. As long as your more mechanical than a rubber spoon, there's not much you can't do to a blaster. Example : reeds : loosten 2 clamps on carb, pull loose from air cleaner boot then manifold, no need to disconnect anthing else, set aside . 4 bolts with 10mil head ,remove intake manifold and reed cage. Easy wasn't it ? I:I At this point might as well replace them as to just inspecting them. Duel stage reeds give improved low throttle response and better top end power. Make sure you get a new gasket for it.
Between your manual and here you'll be golden. I:I
