Hello, just got a 1987 VW Cabriolet (Convertible) today, looked at it 2-3 weeks ago though.

It has a 1.8 (no turbo.... yet.) Starts right up, we were suprised I:I

It runs, but was in a front end crash... So a few things are needed.
-Power steering resivior
-Both fenders
-Front bumper
-Grill
-Hood
-Radiator
- Probably more...

Will try to keep this updated with everything we are doing I:I I:I

Here are some pictures --

Funny, the "trunk" opens upwards like a hatch would, but not very high.

that should not surprise you, i've had 6 different vw's from an early 80's scirrocco, 85 and 87 gti's, 88 fox, 89 jetta gl, and my all time fav
90 jetta gli 2.0 16v wolfsburgh edition
3 of those had 250,xxx + on them, and if you even breathed on the key they fired right up, even in the dead of winter.
good reliable cars...i killed 2 trannies (speedshifts to 2nd and 3rd gear burnouts  )
but never a tick on any of the engines.

my son is now hooked, demolished his 95 jetta and now has a 2002 with 90,xxx on it

look around, parts are readily available and fairly cheap, i think i bought a brand new gti grill for $30 once.
most parts from all the mk II series interchange from the golfs/jettas
(a cabrio is a golf with a ragtop)

check out the vwvortex forum for all the info you'll ever need and some parts classifieds.
kinda like this place, but for dubs :)

i'm tuned in for the rebuild !

Does anyone know what this tank is for? Its under the passenger side fender (we think theres one on each side)

The tank is empty and dry...

This is going to be a bigger project than expected...

I believe those tanks are vacuum resiviours....follow the lines.

Where's the windsheild washer fluid tanks on it.??

One on each side? ....might be for kaleco auto blinker fluid ;)

I think I priced aftermarket fenders for $88 a piece once?

So far, i cant find the inner fender (passenger side), and a power steering reservoir...

If anyone can find/knows about some VW junkyards in MN, please post a link or something to them, Thanks I:I

I will post a better list of things i need later.

AHHHHH that thing brings back memories..i had 81 same thing it only has 40k original miles. I have it to my girl at the time and ofcourse she wrecked it along with a few of my other V dubs.. i laugh about it now but i think i cried when she wrecked my jetta.. Me myself and i know AWK like the old school dubs u can't beat em.. i think i just had a flash back lol.. one thing i will let you know is I'm not sure on that year but the whole ignition sudden runs right be the drivers side windshield under hood. Sometimes with sky if rain there's a little drain thingy there and when it backs up it will get ignition plug wet ,, right where it plugs in.. and you will get sporadic back guess and all kinds of stuff electrical pribd.. check that n see if it's in same spot I'm talking about.. they did change it but i can't remember what year.. i did corrado motor swap in it right before she got smashed... the gl4 swap on the cabrio i mean ,,,aka the strawberry basket.. i barely see these around anywhere any more..and like AWK said check out vw vortex.. also there is a huuuge supl oily rr of vw parts not far from me can't remember the name look up w parts in shandaken n.y that or in phoinecia.. those guys are great.well they used to be anyways it's been a while. If your doing the front end you can get the big front bumper the 4 round headlights and put the brow on it, it looks like it's sleeping lol.. nice find..

I think I have one of them cars in the yard .

That steering reservoir isnt the right one, it wont fit

That forum you suggested earlier is terrible... I posted the same thing asking for help, the first response i got is a guy asking about what kind of buffer i have...

check them websites, if they had one rezzie, they may have the correct one.

and as for vwvortex, i haven't been on it since it changed to vortex, it used to be something else and was much better back in the 90's

The guy was going for the "that'll buff right out" joke...

And im lazy right now, so i will check later... I NEED to find an inner fender first

I agree it used to be a good site. But i myself hadn't been on there since late 2000 2001 and for a short period in 06,, this change just like everything else. Sometimes for the good sometimes for the bad.. It did use to be a good site though.. and what do you mean by buffer? I'm lost on that one????

and it was posted in the wrong section, but now that it's in the correct cabby section, that mk3jettaman from stroudsburgh pa. is also a member on here, i forget his name, but have talked dubs to him on here too.

be patient, someone may help you on there if the link suggested fails too

He asked what kind of buffer i had, meaning he was going to tell me the dents will "buff right out" its kind of a lame car joke...

Ahh ,, got me on that one.. :p. , So in retrospect it sounds like here in this forum.. there already busting your bllzzzz... sounds like the good ole days to me...

We found a radiator support online.

For parts, rather than finding EOM online, we are thinking of buying another whole car... We found an 80's VW Rabbit on CL for $400 (Doesnt run good) But the car would have everything i need, other than good fenders, one is dented

So the deciding factor, spend $400 for everything and buy new fenders, or try to find all the parts... Im thinking ofthe other car, but LMK what you think I:I
