Hello everyone I am new to the forum and a new Blaster owner. I never knew that these ATV's had such a following. I bought a 94 blaster that is in pretty good shape from a buddy and plan on completely restoring/modifing it. This is not going to be a quick project and will probably last several years. My main focus right now is getting it running well then I will start on the modifications. For the most part the machine runs ok but not good, it is stubborn starting but once started and runs for a while it usually will start right up. Also if its run for a long weekend becomes almost impossible to kick start and has to be jumped. I am thinking this is a combination of Carb/spark plug. I do know both the original owner and the second owner who are both friends of mine so they are some help but on past mainteince which has not been much. The only mod that I know if is a rear hydrollic trenga brake system which i just had someone rebuild since it was not working. My questions are

1. Should I upgrade the carb or rebuild the factory one?

2. What is TORS and why do you want or not want it.

3. What Jet system would you recommend?

4. What exhaust and Silencer would you recommned?

5. What are Reeds/Reed box and what do they do?

6. What options for frame restoration is there?

Thanks for any info.

well lets get started
1. Upgrade
2. Scrap it
3. No system just jet it properly
4. If your not planning on porting or going bigbore a toomey is good
5. Reeds are a one way valve system that lets fuel and air into the motor
6. Sandblast and powdercoat/paint
hope that covers everything

1. Should I upgrade the carb or rebuild the factory one? bigger carb

2. What is TORS and why do you want or not want it? get rid of it its nothing but a hassle

3. What Jet system would you recommend? like ruthless says just get it jetted right

4. What exhaust and Silencer would you recommned? i would say shearer pipe

5. What are Reeds/Reed box and what do they do?ruthless hit it on the head. check into some v-force reeds

6. What options for frame restoration is there? powder coat is the best way to go. nitro tate on here does powder coating. you can get almost anything powdered.

i agree with jt, but for more info on the vf3's, there is more surface tip area which increase throttle response for when you are coming off the line or out of the corners i love the way mine runs, if you plan on doing some port work go with a 34mm carb, and tors elminator kit, you will loveevery minute you ride ur blaster, it hits so hard coming out of first and its a beast all the way through the gears, personally i like the lrd exhaust, because i have it, but if you send ur motor to kennedy, get the shearer, thats what he reccomends

Thanks for the help everybody, now another question since everyone said to upgrade/replace the carb. What size should i go with. I was looking at a 33mm keihin but did not know if that was to big?

in my opinion the carb is very important, but it's overkill till you get some better sh*t done first. i think the exhaust is #1 on a 2stroke motor. the pipe dictates the curve of your band and that's where everything starts.
the order of priority goes as such IMO: pipe, port design, head design, timing, carb/intake/jetting.
i'd HIGHLY recommend the shearer pipe. that thing has a ridiculous powerband, w/ a SUPER strong bottom/mid and pulls the sh*t out of the bike. no other pipe can compare for trails and tight bottom end pull.
as for jetting, don't worry about buying a jet kit. just buy an assortment of main jets and rejet till you've got it right. the stock needle works fine and the pilot jet should be large enough for most applications (this is all if you keep the stock carb).
a really good cheap mod is to remove the airbox lid (i installed a velcro'd cover from outerwears for protection) which drastically increases airflow. this will require rejetting. and another is the diy timing advance (look in the diy section).
after you get the pipe, look into the p&p and head redesigning ( i always recommend kennedy_power for that). that's easily the single most effective mod you can get.
the tors is nothing more than a safety measure that malfunctions all the time.
the reeds live right between the intake port of the motor and the carb. they serve as a one way check valve so that the air/fuel/oil mix can enter the engine (both the combustion chamber and the crank chamber), but won't blow back into the carb during compression. upgrading to a faster flowing, faster responding cage/reed setup will give you much better throttle response and engine agility.
