Hey guys I'm new to the site and just bought a blaster from my brother inlaw. Ive had a few dirt bikes but never had a 4 wheeler. I got it really cheap but there's a few problems with it. That being said, I have a few questions.

First of all, the worst problem, the motor runs fine but the transmission is locked up I guess you could say. It's in neutral but the shift lever feels bound and wont up shift or downshift. He said it was running fine and started to pop out of 3rd gear. It did that a few times then he lost all gears. Is there any type of common problem with these trannys? I was hoping to fix it without splitting the cases, but no big deal if I have to do so. Second, neither the front or rear brakes work. The pads appear to be in descent shape, although I haven't had much time to look the machine over too well yet. Is that a common problem? And lastly, how do I figure out what year this thing is? Thanks for any responses guys!

I can tell you if it's a 88-02, you have a mechanical rear brake and drums up front. It's a cable system, and they just suck. However some people on here run them, and I'm sure they work. They may just need to be adjusted by turning the wing nut in, making them tighter. It's located on the inner part of the drum. It attaches to the end of the cable that runs to both sides. Or your cables could be stretched out. Your inner drums may need a good cleaning and scuff.

Welcome to the forum. Most of the problems you described are minor. The tranny not shifting could be a few things, bent shift shaft, detent spring poped, shift forks broken etc.

Good news is its all stuff that can be fixed, and you'll enjoy your blaster when its done!

Welcome ,, and like Dirty said it most likely isn't major and we can get you fixed up and going.. These tranys are pretty good tranys, they don't fail much. If anything start with pulling the clutch side cover and make sure all is well, then we can go from there, shift star shift drum?? Post some pics of the Blasty. We like pics..

i showed you how to find year in your other thread:)
brakes? if there drum adjust them.
if hydraulic check fluid level/and or bleed them of any air/or perhaps piston in caliper is frozen:D

Welcome to the forum. As said above the rear cable brake is no the best set up. A shorty cable, eliminating the parking brake cable to the handlebars helps. But the best solution is a rear hydro set up. The front drum brakes work well if you stay up on the adjustments.
