OK Ive been reading off and on on here all day and dont find anything exactly like my problem so I figured id ask and see if anyone knows whats going on.

I bought this blaster and the guy said it needs a tune up.. that it would start but wouldnt idle right.
I brought it home and today I went out and messed with it. I put fresh gas in and a new plug and for the life of me I couldnt get it to fire up.
So I got my brother to pull me up the road with the other four wheeler and I pop started it and it ran fine but wouldnt idle (just like the guy said)
So I took the carb apart and checked everything and made sure nothing was clogged up and that didnt help (everything in there looked like brand new in fact).
So I got gas .. got spark and it is capable of running but I cant get it to start by kick starting it.
Any suggestions?

compression is probably low.. thats what it sounds like to me.. check your reeds as well..

I'll second that.Souns like compression is low, catch it now and get away with a hone and new piston kit and a gasket set.Do a compression test and get back to us.

Ill run a compression test this weekend. My compression tester is at work .. ill bring it home with me tomorrow. Just out of curiousity what does a piston kit and gasket set run and wheres the cheapest place to get them?

When I got mine same problem, only to find the air mix screw was all the way in,
1 and a half turn out and she idled just fine.

I got a wiseco piston for 100 and i think a vitos high compression gasket kit for i want to say 30 but i'm not sure. if you need a new cylinder and rod it'll be more

I wouldnt think I need a new cylinder and rod if it runs?

I was looking on ebay and finding kits for around 100 bucks with gaskets and all.
What im wondering now is what do I want? I would think maybe 20 over and ill take the cylinder to the machine shop and have them bore it out.
But do I just tell them 20 over or do I take them the new piston and let them figure it out or what?
Im pretty clueless on this.. ive never worked on a motorcycle engine before beyond basic stuff. I rebuild car motors every now and then with no problems so Im sure I can do it. Thing is with a car motor I take the block to the machine shop and they supply the parts and get everything to the spec is needs to be for the parts that they supply.
All I do is put it all back together.

Anyway.. it may not even be that.. Ill find out when I run a compression test but if it is that I figure I should know what im getting into.. and also even if that isnt the problem now from all my reading here it seems that WILL be my problem someday so knowing what to do isnt a bad thing.

When I got mine same problem, only to find the air mix screw was all the way in,

Which screw is that? I havent even downloaded a manual on this yet :-[
Were you also not able to kick start yours but could pop start it?

^^^^^^ thats cool and all but do the comp test and see what it says. if you can get away with a hone and rings just do that you wont gain any power by boring it out. if you have low comp take the cylinder to a good machine shop and let them make the call on what needs to happen.

On the choke side, about a inch and half to the right of the choke,
when i got you had to kick the snot out of it. so i just started with the basics.
soon as i found this she kicked rite up.

Well.. ran a compression test.. I couldnt get it over 60psi and that was kicking it pretty hard.. but I couldnt get my compression tester to tighten down too good so im not sure if that accurate or if it was leaking around the tester. Either way im pretty sure its low.
I took the reeds out and theyre not broken or anything but not closing very good either.
Also adjusted the idle/air screw where it should be with no luck.
I stuck my finger in there and pushed and pulled on the piston and it seems to have too much movement so I guess im down to pulling the cylinder.
Any other thoughts before i proceed? And where can I get just rings? Do I have to go to a dealer? Everything I have seen has been a piston and ring kit.
Thanks for any help.

reeds.JPG

Theres the reeds.. kind of a crappy pic but it kinda shows the gap.

I also dont even know if its ever been jetted right or anything. Not sure how that would affect it. Its got aftermarket exhaust.. not sure its the stock carb.. and those reeds are more a yellowish color so im guessing those are aftermarket as well.

Take your reeds off and flip them over and see if they close.
If I had to guess it's just time for a top end. If it hasn't been jetted for the aftermarket exhaust then it has been ran lean and smoked the top end.

I have no clue.. thinking maybe i got in over my head and its time to pass this one to someone who knows more and find a running one.

jetting is not all that difficult. you just take the bowl off the carb, remove the little brass jet and read the number on it.. tell us what numbers on it..
buy some reeds. or flip em. pull the head.

You can look at the inside of the cylinder and check the piston for play at TDC.
CHeck for scratches and grooves in the cylinder walls.
