Hey Everyone, I just joined this forum, and I was hoping for a bit of help with a blaster I just bought used. It's the one in my sig(and avatar). I do have the plastics and whatnot and hopefully can post some better pix once its running.

So I bought it not running for 250, took it home, took apart and cleaned the carb (was leaking like crazy - floats were mis-adjusted), mixed some gas n oil at 32:1 (injector has been bypassed) and it started right up. I drove it around my yard and was trying to adjust the air screw to get it running just right, and it just shut off. Now it sounds like it doesn't even want to start.

So I came here and went through the "my blaster is running sh*tty" thread (thanks awk08) and it was very helpful. However after going through, it still won't start. Here's what I have:

-Strong blue spark with new ngk br8es
-compression at 118 psi
-carb cleaned out, inline fuel filter, good flow
-new airfilter
-floats at 20mm
-main jet is a 230(stock i believe?), stock idle jet too, both are clean

Spark plug is wet after 20 or so kicks, but not too wet.

When I kick it over with the airbox not attached, I can feel air coming back out from the carb if I put my hand up to it. Is this a good indication that a reed valve is broken?

I'm also unfamiliar with a leakdown test. I feel like an air leak wouldn't prevent the blaster from starting, but I'm not sure.

It also doesn't have a silencer at all, if that makes a difference.

Any help is appreciated, I'm feeling like it's the reeds because I have spark, fuel, and compression.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have a good start on troubleshooting. Definitely pull off the carb intake boot and examine those reeds. They do fail and it wont run with a chunk missing.

Put a silencer on it, this shouldnt be your prob, but it is not good for the motor. A 2stroke needs the backpressure

BTW, when you adjusted the float, were you careful to adjust it on its side so that the needle spring wasnt compressed? Not doing this will throw off your setting.

Thanks royal,

I pulled the reed cage out and found the culprit; a big chunk of the lower left reed is missing. What's the best place to get oem reeds? Or should I just go aftermarket? There are some composite ones on ebay for like 25-30 bucks.

I did adjust the floats on it's side and yeah, I definitely need a silencer for it, but what do you expect for 250 right? :)

Thanks again.

Welcome aboard and congrates on gettin a blasty hope you get it running soon sounds like you got a good handle on it. get the exhaust put together. and check your reeds. does it still have the TORS on it?

For replacement reeds, check out the Boyseen Power Reeds. I have them and they're a nice improvement over stock and only about 25 bucks.

Yep, search ebay for "blaster reeds" and you will get a nice list with a range of prices. I like Boyesen and they sell about 3 different flavors. I ran the dual-petal fiber ones for a while (the cheapest) and I thought I could tell the difference.

by silencer, you just mean the silencer, not the whole exhaust right?
you really dont need the silencer to run the quad. but you do need the expansion camber.

and with the reeds, go with some cheap boyesen reeds, you will be happier with them.

and 2-stroke work on sound waves.

Thanks for all the help guys, these forums are great!

I have a set of Boyesen power reeds and a new gasket on the way.

It doesn't have the TORS system anymore. It's a 1999, so I'm sure the kid who owned it before me got rid of it, cause I sure didn't, and it's not hooked up.

Sheeblast, by silencer yes haha I mean just the silencer. I have the pipe on there and even the little coupling that goes on the end of the pipe. Just no silencer... it's probably in the woods somewhere. So the backpressure provided by the silencer isn't a big deal?

Thanks again, everyone! I'm looking forward to hitting some trails with this thing!

it will make a difference because the length of the sound wave has changed, so you should get one to put on there. plus it is most likely a little too loud to ride. no one likes a loud noise quad.

Update:

Reeds and silencer have been installed. The quad runs great now and is lots of fun! A whole lot quieter too which is nice. I just got in from doing wheelies in my driveway. I changed my avatar to a more current pic. The red seat and shocks look goofy but whatever. I just wanted to say thanks again for all of your help!

you should also contact holeshotman for a leakdown tester. you need to do a leakdown test everytime you take the head, jug, intakeboot, crankseals off. an airleak will ruin your day not to mention your piston. 35 bucks i think is what they cost. you don't want to see the carnage in my rebuilds gone wrong pile out in the garage. i have thrown about a grand into the trash. well i keep it as a constant reminder to never shortcut anything in a rebuild
