In a van down by the river
bought my first "me" toy in a long time, since the RC airplanes,

Blaster with bllue and white plastics, rebuilt top end factory service after everyrideI:I
got it home and the carb top was held on with zipties, the clutch had a ear broke off the oil injection consisted of removing hoses and putting oil in the gas i hope!!, rear brakes rusted up solid front brakes~one worked, and tores delete was a twist throttle and some wires smashed together against the frame so i gased it up and tore ass through the pasture woo hoo

Now to fix it so its trail reliable
Piston slap at idle and a horrendus gear noise like a meat grinder or ice in the blender

Got me to thinking i used to have a gear drive on the cam of a SBC and it was the NOISY cut gears. so maybe ???

Do the gears make that much noise when there right?

And, can they be cut to like race cut gears

I had the clutch cover off cleaning mud off the sight glass but didnt think to look close enough to remmember much in there

And im pretty tough skinned so dont bother going easy on me first post

these engines do tend to be quit noisy being, that they are air cooled and 2 stroke. Without hearing the noise I couldnt say if it is normal or not. I can tell you at idle, mine sounds decently noisey.

had a few dirt bikes, bu they never made that much noise

Kinda of a churning grinder noise even in neutral

I ran compression and it held at 150psi

replaced the carb, greased everything, fixed the brakes, rewired it, homefabbed a airboot conversion for the 30mm Mikuni, added a carb spacer to clear the clutch, flipped the front wheels, bent all the bent stuff back, added studs in for the stripped footpeg bolts, gutted the gas cap and petcock, added inline fuel filter, drained the transmission of about a quart and more of grey frothy crap, drilled the drain plug for safety wire, replaced all the case phillips with socket heads~ drilled a few that slipped out of the vice grips, did the block off and oil injector pump removal, and milled off some funky looking thing off flush with the case right above where the oil pump was, i quess it was a swirl pump of some kind

Anybody know about "race cutting" the gears? im guessin it would be the gear on the crankshaft that turns the clutch

I don't see why anyone would try to race cut the gears. That area that you grind down was cast to take a water pump. The side cover on a Blaster is the same as the side cover used on the water cooled DT200 dirt bike. The best think to do is post a vid of your Blaster running so we can hear it and tell you if it's a normal sound or not. If your using a spacer for clearance with the clutch arm, it must have a larger then stock carb on it. The most important things to do to your Blaster are leak down test and plug chops to check and correct your jetting.

yes mom

Planning on a leakdown test and pullin the cylinder off to check the rod play as soon as some stuff from ebay gets here.

Im pretty sure per common since , but just for verification when doing the leak test the piston should be in what position TDC BDC or lined up with the passages?

Im on page 10 of search results for good info and have found a nice picture.....

http://www.blasterforum.com/do-yourself-20/build-use-leakdown-tester-10663/

I think its the countless years of the "do a search" reply that make doing a search pretty pathetic.

Thanks for the intrest though im sure ill have some to add and will be asking questions later

Just a quick one, at what compression should octane rating become a issue?
maybe a link to a nice graphical representation.......

Piston position shouldn't matter , tho if it were at BDC, you would get more volume for checking for head gasket leak. Doesn't hurt to check spark plug if you don't hold pressure. As to the noise, did you inspect all gears when clutch cover was off? If not check kick start idler and gear for counter balance shaft, think I saw something about rivets going bad on it. As to "race cut" gears I presume you mean straight cut, haven't seen mention of it here, doesn't mean they don't exist tho.
BTW, welcome !!
