I have a new crank seal on the transmission side and it has no marking on which way it goes in. The manual says it has a mark on one side that says out but this one doesnt. It can go either way so I measuerd the inside hole with a dial calipers. One side is 1.212 and the other side is 1.230. I have pics but I am having problems uploading them.

The side with the groove faces in.The flat rubber side should be the side you will be looking at.

Take a really close look at the new seal. You may need a magnifying glass to see it, but the 'out' mark should be there somewhere. If you don't see anything, remember that there is a garter spring wrapped around the lip on one side of the seal. The garter spring side of the seal faces INTO the engine, so that it is not visible when the seal is installed. Hope that helps. If you can post any pics, that would help even more. I:I

there is a garder spring wrapped around the lip on both sides and unfortunately there is no out marked anywere on it. That is what is giving me the problem. Everyone I talked to said it will go either way but the measurements tell me differentely. I dont know how to post the pics otherwise I would post them.

Hmm. Well, crap. This seal is really becoming a pain in the butt, isn't it? The only other advice I can really give without seeing pics is that, since the seal has been measured to have a slight taper from one side to the other, the taper should 'open-up' towards the outside of the engine. In other words, the side of the seal with the larger opening ought to face out. This has been my experience, anyways. In the case of your RH crank seal, it sn't marked because it will probably work fine no matter which side faces out. Good Luck!

I hope any of these pics help you.
