Hi guys,
Well i just joined the forum and i have a couple questions about my new 03 blaster.
Sooooo, the blaster has an FMF powercore 2, boyesen power reeds, DG bumper, new .o6 over namura piston, PCW 30mm racing carb, and Banshee swingarm and hubs.
So can you guys tell me what mods and or upgrades i should do to it and anything i should know?
Also it doesnt have an air filter so should i get a stock one or a K&N air filter?
Lastly, if i want to have a motor with a lot more compression what should i do to the motor that is in it now because it doesnt have a lot of compression, and how much would it cost?
-Cheers

If you have low compression and no air filter, figure on doing a new top end. At .060" over you only have a couple of bores left, so porting might not be a great option for you now. If I'm right about dirt causing ring and cylinder wear, raising you compression by typical means (thinner head and/or base gasket, milling you head or decking your cylinder) is just going to increase more cylinder pressure and it will go quick after that. If you're worn to allow excessive piston slap, there is a good change a broken skirt will be pressed through the bottom of the cases. My advice (if funds allow) is to plan on having the cylinder sleeved, go back down to 66mm bore and have your cylinder ported, head re-chambered and your flywheel lightened. Put it back together with good top end components, go to a 28mm carb and a good set of reeds. After all of that, do a leak down test, break it in with the proper heat cycle procedure, jet it rich for the first couple of tanks then tune the jetting in with plug chops. After all that, you'll have a reliable quad, making good power and not breaking down all the time. Failure to follow the steps properly will soon put you into the position that you will get to try them again, when your engine doesn't last.

Welcome.

I would be looking at why the compression is low.

Was the carby jetted correctly for the pipe.

Did it have an air leak. Leak test it before you pull it apart.

No air filter would have meant that it was running extremly lean and may have damaged the piston.

Thanks for the help!
So dksix, if i did all that to my blaster about how much would i be looking to spend on it?
What brands should i use for all the parts?
And also the guy who i bought the blaster from didnt ride it. He bought it as a part bike and rebuilt a lot of parts on it.

Sorry for the delay. Cost wise, doing it right won't be cheap. A sleeve will be about $100 and installing it will be $100-$150 labor. A piston set will be $60 to $100. Re-chambering a head is $50-$70, porting $150'ish, lightening the flywheel is around $50 more. As far a brands (everyone has opinions, this is mine) L.A. Sleeve for the sleeve, Wiseco piston set, Cometic gaskets and KOR for the labor.
