If you're a better rider than him, then sure.
If not, the 400ex will smoke you in the trails because the suspension is far superior and the gearing on the ex is perfect for woods....you can really rip on those 400exs.
well.. i need to throw a new airfilter in her. carb is stock but jetted.. and it has boysen power reeds.
what are your suggestions for suspension??You'll probably go up on the main when you get that dirty stock filter out of there and replace it with a better flowing aftermarket one. Don't forget to oil it and clean it regularly for best results.
While you may be able to take the ex on in the open (depending on your weight and his, etc.) you'll need some serious suspension work to be able to keep up with him in the trails if you're both about the same in terms of riding experience. Although for you, if you can learn to keep up with him with a poorer suspension, then that will make you that much better of a rider than him in the long run.

get a 34mm carb, some port work and better pipe! then you can hang with him.
