Your going about it correctly...inspection. Just be honest with yourself.
You can purchase a new crank (if you need one), or have yours rebuilt. Ken does an awesome job.

Pistons are all over the place.
Gaskets are all over the place, but stick with OEM (metal reinforced).
New seals are cheap ...OEM are my favorite.
Ebay has good prices.

Yeah...I think we all tried that at least once in our life time (fishing out broken piston then re-build).
I know I did...........A LONG time ago. It didn't work then either.

Ha ha, we all (should) learn from our mistakes.

If I had the time I'd list some of my better ones. At my age I've a pretty good list
