today we were rebuilding my bottom end and we used gasket paper with a metal mesh core for the base gasket and rtv for a temporary gasket on the crankcase because the metalcore paper was to hard to cut so precise. will this work ok? we plan on getting an accual gasket for the crankcase but is the metalcore ok for the base gasket?

the cases are supposed to get yamahabond or something similar, not any type of gasket. the basegasket may work but could end up in catastrophy if not. i stick to oem or cometic base gaskets.

i would never make my own base gasket.. too much riding on a proper seal there. ive made reed cage and clutch cover gaskets without issue but head and base should be cometic or oem.

the paper gaskets we have made dont last long...once they get soaked with gas they start deteriorating, followed by an airleak....just go with cometic, safer in the long run

Even if the base gasket doesn't leak, how thick is it? If it's thicker than stock you will lose performance. My experience is that making gaskets is more bother than it's worth, if you're on a trip or something that's not available is one thing.

My lil bro gabe made a base gasket outta a brown grocery sack,it's thinner than the vitos metal one , constructed out of a paper that is really strong and durable( holds tons of groceries) then i honda bonded it. it increased comp. but retarded port timing very, very, slightly. it only takes a few minutes with a screwdriver handle to make one and its an old dirtbiker trick mines held up great for months. I was a complete skeptic but he had good luck with his and wanted to show me. i will say oem or cometic is the best u can buy.

Yeah, Vitos would leak and leak for nate. I've had very reliable results with the brown paper bag gasket +hondabond or RTV. They are 3-4 thousands thick, vitos is 10thousands and leaks, stock is 20 thousands.
