I know im a newbie here but im possibly buying an lt500r with a locked up engine for like 300 bux, and i need to know what to look for so i can diagnose the problem and fix it. Anyone think its even worth buying? around how much is it to fix if its a motor related problem as crank and piston?

Pics of the bike.

Re: lt500r engine locked up

Hell, you could part it out for more than 300.

Dissassemble the top end and inspect. Hopefully it is just seized, piston to cylinder wall. if not, look for pieces of piston down around the crank area.

Re: lt500r engine locked up

0_0 your sig is awesome, lol. Thanx im most likely going to scoop it up if i do ill get some pics of the tear down and such. The owner said he was going really fast when it looked up, would this point to a specific problem?

Re: lt500r engine locked up

i dont think that it is a 500 either.

and if he was going fast when it locked up then it is probably just seized.

Re: lt500r engine locked up

Thanx for clearing that up, the owner said it was a zilla so i guessed it was an lt500r, Not to found of details between the 2. Anyways just talked to him he said "if you kinda kick back on it itll crank over" what would that mean?

the lt500 and lt250 dont share much things in common.
the plastic might look similar but it really isn't. zillas have a vertical line in nose, 250s have horitzonal lines.

if he can still kick it over, you just might need a top end and it isn't seized

well it depends.
if the crank is bad, it really isn't worth much.
there isn't any aftermarket parts on there at all.
it looks like sh*t.
you haven't given a year either as they changed a lot and the 85-86 models sucks.
87 was a bastard year as they changed mid way through on things
88-89 was the better years
and 90-92 had the better rear shock

find out if it is a PV motor or not. if it is PV then it might be worth getting.
if it is non PV dont waste your time

You don't know the years. That LT is 87-90. 87-92 LT's are powervalved.
87 has the bigger intake cage and has more potential for higher power.
87-90 all have the same rear suspension.
91-92 have the RM rear suspension setup.

the guy doesnt have a title, he didnt even know it was a quadracer and not not a quadzilla im not bothering, sorry to waste all your time. Possibly selling my civic so i can get a nice trx250r and a truck :/

well dpeneding where you live, lot of older quads wont have a title.
but it isn't a zilla frame.
it could be a sh*tty hybrid, just look at the jug around the base, it will say 499cc on it.
but i have never seen a hybrid look that bad.

i honestly just think the guy doesnt know what he owns, if it was a hybrid im sure he wouldve said it in the ad to get more people to call. Anyways idk lol.

Well it's after an '87 model because it has the flared seat. 85 and 86 had a straight seat like the blaster.

I would probably go look at it in person before I made any decision about it. It looks kind of rough in the photo but that's not a real good indication of how someone kept up with the thing. You need to see if the brakepads are down to metal backer, if the shocks are leaking oil anywhere, if any bearings have play in them, if anything is bent out of whack, and if the engine/transmission looks like it's ever been into.

If he ran it out of fuel on a hard pass he might have gouged the piston to the cylinder but the rest of the bike isn't in bad shape (except for the seat cover) it's worth $300 then. If everything on it is wore out and about to fell off, it's not worth $300 because not only do you have an unknown problem in the motor which could be simple or very costly, then you have other costs involved with putting it back together.

yeah i mean i doubt the piston is gourged cause he said he can move it if he kicks it in a different position. But that is true ill try to go see it today with a buddy of mines.

in a different position? that doesn't make sense really.
if he can kick it over someone times but not always, the piston is hitting something like the ports, or something is in the gears to stop it from moving.
