Been doing some searching and this bike seems to suit my needs. Says it has some custom parts on it but being inexperienced and relatively new to this I wanted to ask for some feedback. For anyone who can't view the post here is his description:

"98 blaster 200 runs and rips awesome. 6speed, fmf pipe, new chain, frips and brand new razr hole shots in the rear. comes with an extra set of wheels. 950obo or trade for a manual pick up truck"

By "frips" I believe he meant to say grips.

Any iffy things I should know about this model? Or anything in general I should know about buying a blaster before I get into this? I've got a helmet and I know my way around an engine relatively well so no big worries there. I read that the blaster is injected so I don't need to use premix gas, and to get Yamalube 2S for it. What oil would you guys recommend I use? Also could anyone describe what those modifications do for the performance of the engine, if any? Thanks I appreciate any help and sorry if this is in the wrong subforum, I looked around this looks to be the place to post it.

I also attached the photos of it he posted.

in the first pic it sure looks like the stock pipe (which may be a good thing, as it shouldn't have needed rejetted)
i do see an FMF silencer, which does not enhance performance, just sound
i see the new tires/rims ($200-ish) and nerf bars.

if the frame is straight ? looking with it stood on it's ass end, particularly right behind the lower a-arms where the frame flairs out and back.
and it has good compression?

i'd say it's worth the $, but always start low and try to negotiate a better deal

take a good look at carburator,if it is filthy dirty then he might not have taken good care of quad in general, check bearings, chain adjusters..or whatever concerns you that you dont want to upgrade or purchase for it :) just to say a few words lol
i don't see the oil jug for the oil injection system soooo hopefully he deleted it the right way

anytime you buy something from craigslist, you are looking at problems.

most people beat the piss out of blasters and do no maintain them

if those as they look, the original stock front tires and rims ?
then it's possible that bike doesn't have a whole lot of miles on it for them to still be in that good of shape, that is a late 90's color combo and tank decals, which did come with the yellow rims

Take a milk crate with you. Set it on crate to make it easier to check a arm bushings, swing arm bearings, and carrier brgs.
If chain is relatively tight, pull on chain in middle of where it goes around sprocket. If you can pull it more than about 1/8" chain/sprockets are worn.

Hey guys I have another picture of it this time of the underside. Thanks for the responses I'll check the oil injection and the condition of the bearings and chain etc.

Does it come with the tow rope?

That says it has probably been buried in mud before. Which would lead me to believe it has been played with pretty hard. I would offer 600 to start. I bet you could pick it up for 750.

in my area (Scranton, pa) you could find a lot better deals on blasters than that. There was just a nice 2005 on Craigslist for $1000 obo. I bought my 2003 a few months back for $500, although it did need a piston but the rest of the quad was really clean

It is not a 270, it is basically stock, and no bores left!

I steer away from any things that show pics of crankshafts laying on a gritty brick path.

Ye canna wash grit out of a rod end bearing!

Just what did he use the hammer and screwdriver for?

It looks like he loves blue Loctite, and uses it in excess!

The paint job shows tell tale signs of Rattlecanitus.

Be wary, do the tests, don't get burnt!

Ask the results of the leak test, ask if it has been heat cycled and re tensioned.

Ask if it is heat resistant paint on the pipe.

Look for a green cylinder base gasket!

I do not see an oil tank, ask if a block off plate was used, ask if it was re jetted to use premix!

i 2nd that ^^. I would never buy anything that had the motor rebuilt in Mom's flowerbed. Correct me If im wrong. Isn't the max "SAFE" bore on a stock jug .060?

Not trying to kill ya Slam. I would rather buy a 400 dollar basket case that needs everything, than a 1200 dollar blaster that has who knows what done to it. The latter will probably need everything done to it in short order.

My thought is. Start with a cheap blank canvas and paint the picture you want.

I think I'll stick with the original one I posted then, It doesn't look like there was any work on the engine as far as I can see aside from the silencer. I asked him if there was anything going on with it or any issues and he said none whatsoever. He said he'd do 850 for it too. I'll keep my eye open for a few days though to make sure a better deal doesn't pop up.

Whats your max price? Seems like the prices around the philly area are pretty high. Some of those people wanting $1400-1500 would be like 900 around the Cleveland Area.
