This may seem a little fundamental, but, Can somebody or several people cover, how and what to look for when purchasing a used bike. I have bought two so far and Im learning as I go and its not always cheap. Im very mecanical and understand some of the obvious.I had purchased the first bike and it had a blown base gasket,I seen it when I looked but I did not fully understand how detrimental that could be.$7 later it was fixed with an OEM gasket (thanks to advice from here). These bikes are easy to work on and not always expensive to fix.But they will nickle and dime you to death,$30 here $75 there you get the idea.Im not refering to modding the bike out, just getting it were it needs to be,for basic riding.I hate to spend $800 on someone elses headache,I understand the used market, but armed with some knoweldge will help prevent the headaches, maybe. What and how do I check out the rear suspention? Bearings? Swing Arm? You get the idea.

Money is not what Im refering to.Thats just an example,You can spend 2 grand and have the same problems if your not in the know.

Most people base what they're willing to pay for something based on what it looks like... that's why tire black brings more money than new internal engine parts.

The trick to finding one in good mechanical shape is to your other senses. Feel the kicker, listem to the engine run, smell the exhaust, tug on everything and feel how everything reacts. I wouldn't be TOO worried about things like carrier bearings because, as mmajay said, things like that are wear items and the only way to make sure they're 100% is to pull them out and inspect them. The "tug test" on bearings will only reveal if they're already shot and coming apart...

Take a couple jack stands with you, or some way to support the frame. Wiggle axle then swing arm. Then support front and check arm bushings, ball joints, wheel brgs , etc. Then if you find problems you start beating them up on price. And just because swingarm bearings are "only" $30 (300 dimes,600 nickels :o) , you may have to cut the bolt to get it off, more nickles X(. Good example is I wanted to put grease zerk in rear carrier, I could not get sprocket hub off, even if I cut it would axle come out? Bought a complete good, complete axle for $50.

Point being IF you inspect it closely AND write things down and with some experience with the "nickel" factor you beat them up on price. If they don't budge on price, give them your number and walk away. Pretty much a buyers market right now. I:I

Here we go! This is what Im looking for. Exactly what Larry said, beat em up or walk away. I understand you cant find everything thats wrong but we can try. What am I smelling for? Anything thats smells abnormal? Or something in particular?
