It depends on the led and the peak inverse voltage they are designed to handle.

Leds are diodes, they act as a rectifier.

Most common garden varieties will be destroyed by higher voltages.

Yes sir! I have toasted many! Our older equipment has idiot lights all ac voltage and we tried some leds and they didn't last 10 minutes. all the new equip has dc conversion and uses leds.

okay, what is the best option for installing new, better lights. without going LED and having to install a battery. and breaking the bank. I just got this thing last week the factory head light is gone and the lights on it now suck, I would be better off duct taping some flashlights to the fenders then use them.
Or is there an inexpensive way to put in a battery/rectifier and use the LEDs.

Leds may run on AC but the output will be very much degraded.

so if i get wally lights(2) and switch the bulbs out with 20 watt halogen lights do i have to switch to DC output or does the AC output work?
