do you guys think a leak down should be performed with the carb on or just the topend starting at the intake manifold? The stuff I bought i planned on having the carb in the mix too.

Do not put the carb in the mix.You can enter by the manifold or the spark plug hole. Most use the manifold cause the plug works as a block off.

thanks for the offer holeshot but I already have all the stuff. but can't you have an airleak in the carb? wouldn't that cause the problems with tuning and jetting the carb?

Because where gas comes in under vacuum, air goes back out under pressure....

You can't begin to seal all of the little holes inside the carburetor in order to properly leak test it but those holes don't really matter to the tune as long as they are at or before the fuel metering point. The problem with leaks in the top or bottom end is they change over time. A leaking seal leaks worse one day than it does the next. You'll never be able to hit your jetting marks. The leaks on the carb don't change over time like that. They are stable and compensated for by properly checking the jetting with plug chops.

Just check your engine for leaks and then guess a bit rich on the jetting and work your way down with chops. You'll be fine!
