I figured that since I never did an introduction, I may as well do a belated one.

First, my name is Tyler Faith. There is a porn start with the same name if you search for me (let's see who admits to searching).

Second, I am married with no kids. Both my wife and I are prior active military, both went to Afghanistan. Before that, I was a tail-back at the University of South Alabama. After a falling out with the coach and laying out of class for work, I dropped out.

I am currently a Drill Sergeant with the reserves and I just switched careers from ATV mechanics to the steel industry (more toys soon!). I'm planning on going to college within the next 5 years for either mechanical engineering or med-school. One feeds my hobbies and background, one feeds my (wife's) craving for money. Still undecided on that...

I've been playing guitar for 10 years and have been composing and teaching free online lessons for almost 6. I'm always trying to form a Progressive Metal band, but member dedication is the hold-up.

Outside of that, I'm generally working on computers or playing games.

That's all I feel like typing for now.

Welcome aboard Tyler. Prior Navy here. Thanks for your service. Mechanical engineering would be a good choice. I'm just sayin.

Welcome lol. All I can say is you gotta do what makes you happy. I would say from your posts here that the mechanical engineering would be right up your alley. I could specialize in 50 different things on house building/remodeling and make more money than I do, but I do it all (as a "handyman") and get paid less (funny how that works out). I love it though because I still get time with my family and its something new and challenging all the time. And I also like when I can go behind some big wig contractor and fix all their mistakes, makes me feel good lol. Nothing beats having a job that you love and can look forward to doing (most of the time).

I agree to some extent on the subject of having a job that you love, but I've had great jobs before that I couldn't enjoy because I had problems that could have been fixed with more money. I know engineers make a damn good living, especially considering that my wife is about half-way done with her RN degree, but hear me out.

I'd like engineering, but it's the problem solving of it that I like. In the end, it boils down to me wanting to keep my mind going. With surgery, it would be problem solving, only a different kind altogether. The median wage for engineering is roughly 1/5 of the median wage for an orthopedic surgeon. It isn't so much the money, it's the ability to make sure that I can give my wife the stuff that she wants, get my kids in the best schools (one day), make sure that we have the financial stability that we'd like to have, take the vacations that my wife would like to take, etc.

People say that money doesn't make you happy. It sure as hell helps though. I know that if we'd had money growing up that I could have spent more time with my mom, and that's greater than all the money in the world.

The other thing that gets me is that when I'm having a bad few weeks, I like to go ride and take my mind off of things. I can't do that right now because I don't have the money to have my shocks rebuilt (they're broken). I mean, I will in a few weeks when I start my job, but still.

My most desirable plan is to go to med school for orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery, retire at 45-50, and go back to school for engineering and get a masters in automotive engineering. At that point, I'd like to open a speed shop to build the things that I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise.

My greatest motivation, however, is that I'd like to think that I'm capable of going to med-school. If there is greater financial security for my family in that field and I'm even remotely capable of making it happen, what kind of a person am I if I don't pursue it?

I see your point there. The only drawback I see to the med career is its not really something you can try out first, and once you commit to all that schooling you really don't have much choice but to stick with it. I've always wanted to make more money, but something I realized along time ago is that you can always use more lol. I've known people that make 2 or 3x what I do and have twice the problems, generally and financially. And usually didn't enjoy their jobs, which made everything worse. I think its more about what you can do with what you got. Me and my family of 5 get along just fine on a tight budget, granted it would be nice to take the kids more places whenever I wanted, but like I said you can always find a need for more money, and you don't have to have money to be happy. Then again most women do lol:D

Oh and I'm still paying my student loans from 12 years ago, which I got bored with before even finishing my degree.

I understand the draw of wanting to be a surgeon, but the medical field as we now know it is going to change dramatically in the next few years. It's my belief that when a person goes to the doctor he or she will most likely be seen by a nurse practitioner or a P.A. There by devaluing the need for doctors. Although I'm sure surgeons will certainly still have a place.

True....This is already happening around here at Duke Hospital . Hospital doctors did not like doing out -patient so they started using PA instead. Doctors are now upset that private practice is not paying like it once did.
You should look into ROBTOICS next big money in medical and mechanics.
Maybe..Surgeons will be replaced by robots that can work more precise, work 24 hrs a day and make less mistakes.
