Kick back on blaster. Kickstarter stays engaged too long.

I got a blaster. Looked like hell. But I bought it for $180. I wanted the FMF pipe for my machine.

Dude threw in the engine. One thing lead to another and I rebuild the bad engine that came with my $180 pipe..

So the seller told me he had someone rebuild the engine. The mechanic timed it wrong causing the engine to rotate in reverse and that caused the kick start to stay engaged and broke the middle case half piece that holds the kick shaft.

I got the new inner case half.

Rebuilt the motor.

It runs. But I noticed immediately when I kick it the starter stayed engaged, it literally kicked my foot back up. I chanced it again. Got the motor to start. Ran a heat cycle.

Bought a new kick shaft assembly and installed it. Did another heat cycle. When to run a 3rd heat cycle and it kicked me back again.

This machine has been a nightmare of bad or missing parts and I want to sell the motor to get my money back and just get away. But I don't want to pass on a problem.

Can anyone suggest my issue? I've check gear orientation against stock diagrams and all is well/correct. I wonder if anyone's seen this before? Am I missing a washer? Retaining clip not installed correctly or?? Way too much effort in this motor and I didn't assemble the transmission gears. But I'm fixing to take it all back apart to see if I can find the issue.

Severe kickback is most often a result of ignition timing too far advanced. I've also experienced it with an aftermarket CDI on one of my 250Rs. Swapped an OEM CDI in and the problem went away immediately.

If you consider, once the engine is running, you can hold the kicker down. That because it's sort of a ratchet/one way engagement system. Kicking back means the engine is trying to almost run in reverse, which causes it to throw the kicker back up into your face.

Not to be insulting in any way, but are you kicking it over with purpose? A less than authoritative kick can result in kickback as well.

Yeah I weigh 260lbs and I straight jump on it. No offense taken. I've watched others try to start a 2 stroke.

I am using an afternoon CDI. And the timing is totally up in the air on this one because the plate it has allows adjustment and when I got it the motor was apart. Makes sense what your saying tho. I have a 2nd blaster and tried to copy the timing on it. But they don't make it easy.

I'll try it again tomorrow. I just sold it. So now it ships out. And I did explain to the buyer the issue. I just don't think they truly get it could break the case again.

I'm struggling to know what way to try and move the timing plate? Clockwise advances it. Should I be trying to advance or retard it? To stop the kick back I mean

I would retard the timing. If timing is the cause of severe kickback, it's because the timing is too far advanced. Ignition is occuring too soon and trying to drive the piston down prematurely this resulting in the kickback you are experiencing.

And good on you for being honest with your buyer! The world needs more honest sellers. I don't mind buying a machine that needs some TLC, but I prefer to know as much as possible and as you know, some sellers just don't possess the honesty gene.
