i need help painting!!!!!

hey guys im new to this site, so this is my first post. i just bought a 2001 yamaha blaster last week and im trying to paint it. i want to paint the frame like a metallic red or chrome red... so far the only metallic reds ive been able to find are sort of a flat color. im trying to get an extra shine. like a brighter shade. my other question was if there was any special technique in painting in the cold. where i live it is about 20 degrees right now, and im hoping to paint the quad on Friday. i know its a terrible time to paint now, but i really need to do it because i just scraped all the rust off the quad and there are a few places that are bare metal, and with all the salt on the roads i don't want the rust to come back. i was also wondering if i should seal the paint after im done or is that unnecessary with primer

to do it right, strip the frame to bare metal all over, prime it, paint it, clear coat it.

you are gunna make a mess painting that cold, i would do it, find a shop or something that will let u use some space.

as for the colour, your best bet is gunna be a car paint, if by chrome red u mean anodized red, u can only get that with aluminum, and the frame is steel

dunno if there is paint for cold weater but i don't think so. you don't have a garage you could put a heater in or a shed.

hey guys thanks for the replies. and yes i am looking for that anodized look, but i did not realize you cant use anodized paint on steel. is there anyway i can get that same anodized look with a paint that works on steel?.

i was also wondering if all paints are as durable as other and provide the same rust protection. like ive heard rustoleum is the best at that but i dont know if that is true.

you can get dulicolor anodized paint, iv used it before, will look anodized and yes its made for steel, or anything actually,

if you paint in the cold you will have poor results

as a former automotive painter. dont paint in the cold, preferably anything under 60 degrees for best results. a heated garage, or even simply a garage with a space heater blowing on the frame the whole time with the paint heated as well.

ok will do, i will use a space heater and will paint in my garage. my garage was around 45 degrees today and its 20 degrees now. im planing on painting Friday and its supposed to be 35 so my garage should be around 55 degrees. so if i cant buy a space heater by then, do you think that is warm enough. also with the duplicolor anodized paint, do you still have to use a primer and sealer and if so what kind?. sorry, ive like never really painted before

i would always use a good primer and good clearcoat as well. be easy spraying the layers on. that paint will want to run like a mexican from the border patrol when its cold.

lmfaoo.. i couldnt think of a better way to put that....and just to clarify this.. you can use the duplicolor anodized paint on steel because like ive heard some people say you can and some say you cant?

i've never messed with the duplicolor anodized series. looked it, but no experience with it. so i can't say yes or no. don't want to mis-lead you

Link to their web site. If this is what you are looking for it says it is for use on chrome surfaces. It may work on your frame but it will not give you the shine that you see in the pics.

Just wait and do it right, have it sand blasted and then get it powder coated. They have the color your looking for plus many many more. it'll cost more but it will way outlast the rattle can your planning on using. I paint for a living and we keep out booths between 90-95 degrees... it helps the paint lay down smoother and also aids curing the paint quicker. IF you do decide to use spray paint, most people dont understand that 95% of how the paint looks is in the prep work, just make sure when you sand it that you start off with 180 grit working with the shape of the frame and not going along the rails as that will cause flat spots, finish it, go to 220 and repeat. Prime it if there is any bare metal exposed, and im sure there is, and if you want to get really detailed use a sandable primer, let it dry then wet sand with 400 then 600... let all the water dry or skip wet sanding and get a surface cleaner(not windex lol) we use sikkens akzo nobel M600 cleaner, or just use acetone and clean the frame off very good, 2 or 3 times if needed with a clean cloth. Make sure you clean it before your prime it as well. If you want to use a tack rag to pick up any excess lint fibers or dust then do that using very very light pressure to wipe the surface. your now ready to spray it, and honestly i wouldnt spray it in any environment under 70-75 degrees so do what you have to do to get some heat. I hope this helps, and definitely post pics for everyone of your progress...ill be doing this same thing on my girlfriends 05 that i got her, and doing plastics as well.

thanks everybody for the responses. i have decided to use duplicolor metalcast anodized red paint. i have also thought about everyone's suggestions to work in a heated space and will be doing so. i am going to paint the blaster in my garage, and even though it is an attached garage i think its still too cold to paint in. i would pay someone to professionally do this but i am honestly broke, due to the fact that i spent every last cent i had buying the quad. this being said, im going to try to borrow a space heater for when im painting. my question is though, that i have heard that you cant paint with a space heater anywhere near where your painting because its a fire hazard or something like that. is this true ?. if so how do should i go along using space heater to paint

That is true, just keep the heater as far away from your work space as possible and u will be okay. A good space heater won't need to be right next to you in order to get the room temperature adequate enough to paint. Like I said before, make sure your prep work is meticulous and you won't be disappointed in your results... just be careful for spraying too thick since it'll run...spray the first couple coats light just to achieve good coverage.
