For the inexperienced cutting off the threads is a must.
As one gets older and more wisened one will obtain the experience to be able to read a plug without ruining it.
My advice to a newbie with only a little experience will always be to chop the threads to be able to see perfectly what the ring colour is. Leave nothing to chance.
Whenever a customer asks me for a tune for maximim performance, (you know on the borderline of lean) I deem it a must to remove those threads, I leave nothing to chance that I could see correct colour without removing them.
