Hey everybody, new to the forum. I just got a 2000 Blaster from CL. The guy told me he hasnt started it for the last couple months and it wasnt starting now. He said try to change out the plug and it should start up. He mentioned it may need a new top end soon but should be fine for now. Im not a mechanic but I have changed the spark plug, there is a spark. I've used the "how to clean a carb" post here to clean the carb. Ive changed out the fuel filter and fuel line from the tank to the carb. Put new gas in the tank. Changed the oil in the crank case. Its still not starting. It sputters two or three times when I kick it and give it a little throttle but thats it. I dont know how much more I will be able to do, but Im willing to learn. Id rather do things myself then pay somebody else a ton of money if its something I can do. Any ideas on what I should try next? Thanks for your help!

Try a compression test.if low like 100 or below gonna be hard to start by kicking over.also pop off reeds and check them.also check flywheel make sure it didnt spin the key way.if did timeing could be off.

Hey guys, so Ive come to the conclusion that its the top end that went. I bought a compression tester and tested it.... 10 psi.... Ouch! I did it a few times, kicking it over and over and it never went past 10. So, I started taking the top end apart, but two bolts are stuck on at the base of the cylinder. The piston looks like there is some damage, but I cant get it out so Ill post a picture to see what you guys think.

So, Sparky, to answer the questions from your email:
Mods that I know of- FMF Fatty Gold series, TORS eliminated, bored out to a 280cc.
Jetting- Main is 155 and the pilot was 65. I talked to the parts manager at my yamaha store and she said that 65 is way too big and suggested backing it down so we put a 42 in it.
It does not have an air box, there is actually a mod done to the carb with an exhaust piece for an air filter to attach to. I have not idea if it has gotten wet.
As far as spark, I can see a spark bit its faint and hard to see. Ive looked up gapping and most say they gap around .030. You said .7-.8??

I guess next I have to figure out a way to get the bolts off so I can get the cylinder and piston off and get it all looked at.

Its probably a standard cylinder bored .0080 over. That doesnt mean its a 280. Just clarifying that for you.
Sounds like you have an aftermarket carb if you are running those jets. Im not familiar with jetting on bigger carbs but im sure someone else will chime in with a good ballpark number to get started.
Definitely throw a new plug it, its only a $2 investment and well worth it. Yes i believe the plug should be gapped between .7-.8mm
For getting those nuts off the cylinder you may want to try soaking them in PB blaster or hit them with a propane torch for a good 30 seconds or so. They should come off no prob.
You are aware when you do a compression test you have to hold the quad wide open throttle and kick it over several times? Just making sure you know. 10psi is possible but that means it was ran lean and not just worn from time...
Sounds like your topend is fried. Send it out for a bore and hone and grab a new piston. New plug with a topend gasket kid and you should be all set.

Oops... newbie mistake. I didnt have the throttle open. :( Should I bother putting it back together and test it again or just take the parts in to have them look at them? Thanks for all of the input!

Looks like there is some damage to the piston?

At this point you're only talking a base gasket. With that chip out of the piston might as well pull it down. Don't know if there's a larger overbore IF you're at .080 already.

Dont bother putting it back together. Like Larry said. With a chipped piston like that it needs a bore and hone. Since you are already at .0080 (the max you can bore a cylinder) over that means you need a sleeve or a new cylinder. Check out one of the site sponsors like oconner racing to see what the best route to go is.

Just so you know you never want to reuse any gasket (especially a head gasket) on an engine. Gaskets that aren't under compression you can get away with reusing a couple times such as the clutch gasket or reed cage gaskets but if you have replacements use those... Dont bother with putting it back together this time, send it out to get some work done.... If you want some extra performance and have some extra money consider a port job (opens the intake and exhaust ports for faster, higher volume airflow) and consider getting the head shaved (then you can only run premium fuel, 93-94 octane) but itll give you some more power for a fairly small amount of money. Just comes down to how much money you wanna throw at it.

I dunno if you have seen it but I have a topend rebuild vid in the link in my sig if you need some extra info on the rebuild....

I am just going off what the guy that sold it to me said, the .0080 bore. I dont know if its true... The jerk told me it may just need a new spark plug and it should start up fine. Then said it may need a new top end sometime. Wish he would have just said it needs it up front... I kinda got taken for a fool, but Im willing to work with what I have now. Im just pissed at the guy, and of course he wont answer his phone... Lol. Ill take everything in next weekend and let you guys know. Going to Vegas tomorrow for the week!

I got the bolts off.... took off the cylinder and piston...I feel like Ive been raped. *sigh* Even if I just put a sleeve this is going to be $400-$500. sh*t. Here is they cylinder and piston. Doesnt look good.

Hard to tell by the pic but if that bore is not scored and what I see is just aluminuim build up, you may get away with a hone and a new piston. Not the recommended way to go but may get you riding on the cheap.

I had my whole entire engine rebuilt, New Crank, Piston,Rod,Bearings,Gaskets, And rehoned the cylinder and new clutch for less then $600. Went with Wiseco parts also. My daughter redlined the crap out of it in third gear for about 5 minutes and literally seized every bearing in the motor solid. Basically a huge chunk of metal after she got done with it.

The crown of that piston tells a dismal story of serious detonation, either from poor jetting or an air leak somewhere. If you do the rebuild make sure you do the checks prior to starting.
If you choose to have it done in a shop some of the guys in US can give you some leads.

I just did an eBay search for Blaster Cylinder and there are a few ready to go cylinders including pistons & rings for around $300. There is one guy on there where you send your damaged cylinder and he re-bores it and sends back with matching piston and rings for $139.00. Since you are at the bore limit, you might be able to contact him through eBay and see what his price for re-sleeving plus piston/rings is.

Jokes on him. He gets to live with himself knowing he screwed someone over. You get to learn about your machine and make tons of internet friends that will bend over backwards to help you out! You will always make more money....

Hey Roost,
Thanks! Do you know the name of the guy that you found that info on? That might be a good alternative for me.

Lakesmotorsports has a good deal on ebay if you look them up. You can always pick up a used cylinder on ebay and send that out as well. Then you dont have to do a resleeve.

Enjoy your Vegas trip!!!
