help with engine problem

I am gonna make this short.
I have a 99 blast with about 25 hours on it. I am original owner

my 99 blaster has not ran in a year and I pulled it out and tried to start it.
it started but will not idle with the choke pushed in so I road it around the yard for about 5 mins and stopped. when I was riding it I noticed it was blowing smoke and when I stop I can hear ticking from the motor. I put it away and went to look at it the next day and noticed a small oil spot on the garage floor, also I noticed oil on the head by the plug.
any advice would be great. I didn't want to tear down the motor if it is something easy fix.

The first thing you should is to add fresh mix and a new plug. Take the carb apart and clean it. Make sure air filter is clean to. Do a leak down test and change trans oil.

I did a carb clean, fresh gas, and it still is blowin smoke and ticking from engine and only idels for a few minutes and dies and the choke has to be pulled out.
what is a leakdown test?

sounds like the pilot jet is clogged with dried gummy oil from sitting so long ?

ticking could be a leak at head gasket, base gasket spark plug or exhaust and just sounds like a tick ?
could also be running lean due to the clogged jets and what you hear is detonation ?

a leakdown test will pinpoint any leaks.....

is the heavy smoke white and smell funny ?
could be a crank seal and sucking trans fluid ?
a leakdown test will help find it

why would I have oil on top by the plug?
NOTE---I have not taken the tank off to look at the motor.

oil on top of the head may be coming from loose head nuts or loose spark plug

ok,, tore apart the carb and cleaned it, choke had lots of build up so i cleaned that, the main jet was a little dirty so i cleaned that.
the oil on top WAS coming from a loose plug.

put it back together and started it. It started with the choke in "IT WOULD NOT START LIKE THAT BEFOR".
So the carb is cleaned and workin and it idels now but I have ticking still in the motor.
a buddy said maybe it needs rings,,
it smokes a little less now but still is smoking.
what is your opinion? should pull off the top end and check that out?

keep in mind I am learning as i go, I have never messed with motors befor

The ticking is hard to say. Could be anything from an exhaust leak to a worn piston wrist pin. I would use a length of pic held to my ear to listen around the head gasket for leaks. I would also listen around the exhaust flange to. You can also pull the stator cover and plug plug to check for play in the rod and wrist pin. Just grab the stator and twist it back and forth to listen for to much play.

A two stroke motor will smoke, so some smoke is normal.

Learning as you go, thats how I did it. lots of great people and info on this site. One thing I learned early on is the importance of leak testing these motors. Unwanted air coming into your motor will destroy your engine.

Buy or build a leak tester. That method should be avoided at all costs.

To test for a leaky gasket?

Yeah I heard of it. I just never liked the idea of spraying carb cleaner around my gaskets. Then waiting for that rev extra stress that's unneeded.

Leak test is much safer and tests everything! That may not be the only leak.
