I purchase some heli coils for my oil drain plug but I did not get the kit...I asked the guy from ebay what size tap I need . he told me this "You cannot use a standard tap. You must use a special STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap. You will also need an installing tool" I do have the installing tool. I have lots of taps does anybody know if this is true or knows what size tap I can use ... the heli coils are 12mm x 1.25 ......

yeah he is right you need the kit. i hate heli coils ..those things cost me a motor once on my kfx...i highly recommend u dont use em and just re tap some threads and go a size up

I haven't had a problem so far!

Mac, don't know the answer

Y can't I just buy a tap from a hardware store or a auto parts store....I have the coils already and the installation tool...

Shoulda bought a timesert kit. Helicoils are junk.

x2, time serts are the way to go

While timesert's are a better, more permanent option they're also twice as expensive as a helicoil kit and a helicoil kit will hold a oil drain bolt satisfactorily.

Considering he already HAS the helicoils, why not aid him in finding a solution to his current problem instead of saying what he has is junk?

Well I'm not saying I helped a whole lot, all of those taps are still like $25 (they just don't give good machine tools away anymore!) but it's a start... At least if you have all of the other components to mount and install the helicoils, the taps can be had without buying the whole kit.

25? for just the tap that link you sent me before was like 25$ for the tap insert tool and the helicoils

Helicoil kits are usually about $30 - $40 (depending on size) and come with the STI tap, helicoils, and installation tool.

Those links I posted are for the tap only from suppliers other than helicoil. They charge a premium for only getting one part of the kit (and not from the original manufacturer). If you installed a BUNCH of these (like a dealership or automobile shop) and broke your tap, it would save you a few bucks to buy the tap separate and you wouldn't have the duplicate parts from another helicoil kit laying around....

i would still recommend against the helicoil and just return it..not only do they not seal well at all (seep oil) but i had one unknowing break apart during installation and seized my head and caused tons of damage... me and Alex Cycles in warren ohio (when i lived there) got on the horn with the manufacturer and had them buy me a new motor to settle outside of court

I love the help .... I was going to get the time serts but didn't want to spend $90. Between the heli coil and the tap it will be about $55 .. i should of just got the time serts dam it... I heard from a few people that heli coils are fine..there is a big cooper washer that goes on the drain plug so that why I got the heli coils. I just didn't know you needed a sti tap. I still don't know why I can't fine a metric tap that would work... I guess I'll just pay another $25 on the sti tap.its about the same as a metric one in home depot.

The information "shoulda bought the timeserts" is worth its weight in gold. Now you know...

Luni, I wasn't trying to be a butt about my initial comment, only trying to make lemonade out of lemons. Mac's already got the helicoil's so any help I can offer to answer his original question, I'll offer.

Slick is running a helicoil kit in his transmission drain bolt and it's fine.

I believe Awk's oversize oil drain plug is one off of another quad which is M12 x 1.25.

In my experience, helicoils work OK for non load bearing bolts, or ones that arent removed often. But after a few tightens and loosens they start to screw up. Also Ive seen them seep fluid on this type of application (albeit on a transmission drain plug on a car) and the guy ended up just getting the timesert kit to fix it so he spent more in the end.

So thats why I said what I said. I guess I should have just said this instead LOL.

Why not go to the auto parts store and get a self tapping oversized drain plug. You can buy them in several sizes over, just like pistons. I have used these quite often and never had a problem.
