Engine starts - stops after 10-30 seconds

I just purchased my first quad on Thursday. I took it out for a while on Friday and Saturday (about an hour worth of riding). Today I took it out and about a quarter mile down the street it started bogging out on me and then eventually died. Now I can only get it to start like normal but even when I press the throttle or hold it down it dies within 10-30 seconds. I put premium gas in it yesterday before I took I out for 40 minutes mixing it with 32:1 HP2 racing oil.

Any ideas of what is causing the issue?

Quad:
2006 blaster special edition
Mostly stock
K&N air filter
Oil block off
I believe the rest is stock.

You have to do the basic checks first. Compression test, leak down test. If that's all good, check for proper fuel flow. Check petcock , hose then carb.

I put the mods that I know about in the original post. As far as the jet goes, I have no clue. I just got it. It ran great for two days and out of nowhere doesn't run.

or just take off the carb see what jet your running and while your at it give it a good cleaning

I am going to take the carb out and clean it. Ill let you all now how that goes and what jets are in it. I just didn't know if there was some standard issue that causes this on Blasters. That me for the help so far guys.

I cleaned the entire carb tonight and that didn't fix anything. The Jet size is 260.

After I cleaned out the carb I replaced the spark plug. The quad started right up after that with no issues. It was just strange to me that the quad worked great for two days and then just quit in the middle of running today because of the spark plug. :-/

Thanks for the help guys! I look forward to spending more time on the forum in the future. I:I

Could be the float, if it happens again, take out the float and check for gas Inside the float, i had that problem, i just swapped mine with the extra float we had and VIOLA!

Well, after driving the quad today for about 30 minutes in our Chicago blizzard we are having, I began having the same bogging out issue. It ran fine at the beginning of riding and then began to slowly start to bog out when the engine was under a load at low RPM. Now it will only stay on for 10 seconds again and die out.

I figure that the new spark plug is probably corroded or something similar to that and that is what is causing it again.

1. Am I having this issue because the quad is possibly tuned for summer driving and I am driving it in 32 degrees or does it seem that there is something bigger than that to cause the same issue with the spark plug again?

2. I have not tuned a carb before. Is that something I can somewhat easily learn on my own or should I have someone do it who is a professional?

Thanks for your help so far guys!

I would start with a compression test.If that checks out my guess would be a clogged pilot jet.You can do the carb work yourself. There are plenty of helpful threads here to read up on.A manual and blaster forum will get you through it.I:I Also you should alwasy adjust jetting for colder temps.Running lean is never good.

i had the exact same problem while i was at the dunes last year and also was at sea level, i would ride for a while and then on the way back it would bog out and die. turned out i was running lean, put in a rich ass main jet and then rode hard again

I currently have a 260 jet in the carb. What type of jet would be expected for weather between 30-55 degrees outside?

I jetted a standard bike today same conditions here and at seas level it took a 260 with standard filter and airbox lid on

Well the stock jet is a 230. Fmf recommends a 260. I didnt see a mention of an after market exhaust. What did your plug look like when you changed it? I would say your running rich and fouling plugs. There should not be a 260 in there with a stock exhaust/motor. They come from the factory jetted for sea level-??? Ft. Do a search for plug chop, compression test, and post results.

I have stock exhaust on the bike currently. My old plug was pure black when I changed it. I am near Chicago so I am somewhere near 600ft above sea level, if that matters any.

30-55* is a wide swing in temps. If you look at a Mikuni pocket tuner it suggest 1 size for every 20* change, sooooo. You didn't mention wether air box lid on or not. ???
IIRC, filter is one size up, lid 1, colder temps at least 1, puts you just about where you're at. What does the spark look like? Is it a FAT BLUE or a LAZY YELLOW ?

Also, what plug are you running? Carb is clean? Float level set? Air cleaner been cleaned ??? BTW, odds are taking it to a shop will only cost you $$$$$ and may cost you more if some idiot puts stock jets back in. Also, what is your needle postion and turns out on air screw ???

my guess is he's useing a BR8ES and not a hotter plug for colder climate and jetting is off by a bit from an air leak and the climate is masking it.

1. I would say that the spark is more on the yellow side. It also seemed slightly wet tonight after two days of sitting.
2. I am running the BR8ES plug.
3. I just cleaned the entire carb on Sunday night.
4. I am new to this, so how do I check the needle position and turn out on air screws?
5. As far as the air box goes, I currently have a K&N cone air filter on the carb with no air box. I didn't know anything about the air box set up that came with the quad stock. I found a box from the guy I purchased the quad from that had the stock airbox in it. So...do I need to install that one on the quad? Pros/Cons to having it off?

Is there a way for me to check for the air leak?
