Ive got my newly rebuilt engine back and want to change the look of it before dropping it into the quad.Im wondering what you guys have done and used that has or hasnt worked?

I plan to use DUPLICOLOR engine enamel and have thoroughly cleaned the engine of left over grease and grime using simple greeen and brake clean.

Anyone have any tips or tricks or do's and donts?

Also id like to see pics of the finished product if anyone has taken the time to do this.

Just to let you know, its better to sandblast the top end. Painting also adds heat to your motor therefore causing a drop in performance. your top end will last longer and you will have better performance if its just left bare aluminum. Just my .02 cents.

You could paint the bottom end without any consequences I think... My dad painted his blue in the center section and it looks real nice.

you want to sand blast it to get all the old paint off, than when you paint it use just enough coats to cover the metal... like 2-3 light coats is all you should need

We just sanded the bottom end, it didn't have paint, and painted it with some rustoleum spray paint.

bottom end is fine.. the most heat is the head... so... bottom and jugg would be find but you want the head cool

Yeah... I would keep the head unpainted. You can feel the heat off of it anyway. It would look nice, no doubt.

You guys really think the few thousandths of an inch of paint is going to drastically effect the cooling?

All i did last night was thoroughly cleaned the entire engine and took sand paper and knocked down any high sides of the factory paint and then primed and painted.Im seriously doubting a few thousandths of paint is going to do much harm but if i knew i wouldnt be asking.lol

yes...what the paint does is...it closes all of the little micro pores in the aluminum that act like cooling fins on a radiator.....the more surface area the cooler it will run. well when you fill all those little holes and pores it reduces total area which in the end will reduce cooling....but its not going to reduce it alot maybe a couple degrees, but when dealing with AIR cooled engines, a couple of degrees is a ton. from what ive hear is air cooled motors always have special paint on the engines to dissapate heat, im not sure how much truth there is to that but it would make sense

i know you can order this heat dissapating heat,...i would maybe look into it. if its nota full out race 240 stroked blaster you should be fine, ive seen tons of people paint heads and jugs on aircooled engines and run for years. but its all on you. but cooler is ALWAYS better

Yes, like what mborso said, there are small pores in the fins that are meant to dissapait the heat a certain way. if they are covered up it wont function correctly. im wondering now why mine lost compression and blew up so easily. prolly the couple thousandths of paint i put on it and my Blue powerband, lol

i think someone should do a trial test....i think that would be pretty cool. like one jug and head painted, one completely bare. get a infared temp theremometer. and post results....what are the efficent running temps of a good motor running cool....whats the temp one a air cooled engine running hot? i have a infared temp therm that i keep in the garage...actually i have 3 1 at work 1 in the garage 1 in the house. very usefull btw

I have a temp gun i use on my RC cars and trucks as well as my mustangs what should the temp be on the blaster to be safe?

I ride on trails and in mud alot and want to make sure im not over heating.

If you trail and mud ride, Painting is gonna overheat your motor like crazy! Get it sandblasted and leave it pure aluminum or you can buy the heat dissipating paint. it will cool your motor.

this is straight from duplicolor not sure about an aircooled engine but motor paint is made to dissipate heat
"Both Engine Enamel and High Heat Paint formulas now contain ceramic resins for maximum heat dissipation and gloss retention. The resins also offer protection from exposure to excessive heat and automotive fluids."

What about ceramic coating it? Ceramic coating leaves for a more cooler surface....but I'm not so sure about the head because in exhaust applications, it keeps heat in and not out. Guess i just answered my OWN question...time to go to bed LOL
