I have a chance to buy a Blaster but the owner says there is a problem with starting and running. He says it will start after a few kicks with the choke on but when choke is off engine starts reving way to high. Looking for suggestions as to what it might be before I make him an offer if it's not anything major.

Thanks

Use the search function, revving uncontrolably is a symptom of an air leak. It's been covered plenty of times including the most likely places for it to be leaking, the crank seals and the reed cage sealing surface.

dude is spot on, i'd be nervous as to how long it's been going on if the owner doesn't know what's causing it, scary unless your lookin for something to tear into, wouldn't pay much beings it could be due for a top end if he let it go long enough, he might have it jetted really lean which would escilate the problem as well

^^^^ also fine advice.

If the price is right, it would be a fine project but be very cautious as to the current condition of the quad, it may already have some damage done. It'll be a risk you'll have to weigh against how much the person wants for the quad.

is its running ok-ish with the choke but not without its getting too much air, the choke restricts air to allow more fuel so i agree with said advice!

It was a 1991 and he wouldn't budge off of $325.00. Needed brake caliper, levers and tires where shot so I backed out.

Probably for the better. With unknown engine damage plus needing other parts, you might have been looking at a hefty repair bill.

Running and driving blasters go for about $1,000 on CL around my area.

I just picked up 2 of them from Craigslist here. One is a 1998 paid 375.00. Just needed to go through the carb and a few minor parts. The other is a 1989 paid $250.00 and I haven't touched it yet except to steal some parts for the 1998. May just part out the 1989.
