I am a new member to this forum and have used it to gain valuable information in regards to my Blaster. I am relatively new to the atv world and just purchased a 2000 Blaster in good condition, it is stock except for an fmf fatty exhaust with powercore 2 silencer. I have rode for about a week and noticed an oily mixture on some of the cooling fins on the engine. It seems to be coming from where the top end meets the lower part of the engine. It is not an excessive amount, but noticeable. Is this normal? Also the blaster recently has began to have slight idleing problems. Can the idle be adjusted on the carburator? I noticed on a different posts it said something about the idle adjustment being under the seat but there is no screw located there on my blaster. Thanks for any help.

sounds like you have an air leak

sounds like you have an air leak on the top end, explaining the poor idle too, better order a top end gasket set, and new rings wouldnt be a bad idea while your in there
do a compression test first and report back

Thanks for the quick replies. So I take it the oily mixture on the cooling fins should not be there? Would it be best to fix this problem myself or do you think a repair shop could fix it cheaply?

its pretty simple to do yourself but make sure you check everything after doing it

Like the other 2 said you are getting an air leak from the base gasket. Like Awk said get a new topend gasket kit and check your compression to see if you need rings and or a new piston..

It very simple and you could do it your self. Just read the manual over on a topend rebuild and just follow what it says.

Thanks alot for the help this forum is very useful. I do not have alot of experience working on atv engines what would i have to do to test the compression. Also the previous owner said the blaster had a top end rebuild about 4 months ago is it possible he could have not done it correctly and caused this problem? One more thing is it normal to have some oily mixture on the cooling fins or should this never happen?

It should never happen, its the sign of a blown base gasket and an air leak causing your weird idle
to test compression you buy a compression tester remove the spark plug put the tester in there and kick til the needle on the tester stops moving also hold the throttle open while doing this.
some people do replace the top end wrong but its rare because its easy to do

if your leaking there a compression test is gonna read low, best way to tell if rings are worn is to do a ring end gap measurement, the allowable measurement is in the manual

Thank for the info guys i'm rather dissapointed to have a problem like this after owning the blaster for only 2 weeks. Is this a rather common problem that I should not let upset me? Also do you guys advise to not ride the atv until the problem is fixed?

Yah dont ride it till its fixed. Maybe the previous owner didnt torque it to specs or used cheap gaskets. If it was just rebiult not to long ago you might be ok.

no do not ride it till fixed, the parts are gonna be fairly cheap,
ebay search for top end gasket set

alrite im gonna park it until the parts arrive just ordered them. I rode it 2 or 3 times since i noticed the oil on the fins could this potentially have caused more damage to other parts of the engine?

If it persisted it would of got worse and cooked the topend. Good thing you caught it early...

I have a 1987 yamaha blaster 200cc. I bought it and it needs a new piston and rings. the previous owner shattered the piston. I removed the old piston. The jug is still unscratched. there are though small pieces of the piston in the bottom end. How do i figure out if there is not any major damage? I pushed down on the kick start by hand and everything still feels like it is moving freely. The shaft that holds the piston still moves up and down with no hesitation. Any helpful hints will help thank you
