Engine cuts out

Hi guys,

I am fairly new to 2 strokes and I purchased someone else's mess and have been trying to give it new life. I can get it to idle nicely but it has problems hitting the power band, even if I hold the throttle wide open. Sometimes it hits and it takes off like an animal but it is short lived and it completely cuts out for about 10 seconds before I can rev it up again. It has a K&N air filter, a motion pro tors throttle eliminator, a stock cylinder and piston, and an aftermarket exhaust. It is a 2001 and the guy I bought it from had been racing it with a 240cc cylinder and piston. It had very low compression when I got it so I put the stock equipment back on it. Any ideas why it cuts out? Thanks!

might be floats not adjusted properly or sticking...did you do a compression test on it after re build and a leak test?
new br8es spark plug, fresh gas, clean filter unrestricted exhaust?

what is air screw set at?
what jet size in carb?

Hi, I did not do a compression test or a leak down test. I put a brand new air filter on and the carb has a 230 jet size. I did not check the exhaust for restrictions, anything I should look for? The gas is 91 octane and the spark plug is new, although it may be a generic brand.

After you check the compression and air leak status of the engine, check to see if there is any carbon build up in or around the exhaust port that may be restrictive.

Set the float level and check for constant delivery to the float bowl by cracking open the drain screw and observing the flow from the drain tube, there should be a steady flow.

A K&N filter could need another size up in main jet and if you pre mix one more size up.

Needle on the middle clip, 32.5 pilot jet, set the idle as per specs and then plug chop to confirm jetting.

Ride no more until you have done a leak test, it could cost you dearly if you don't.

Sounds like you have a big piece of trash stuck on the tip of your float valve or one of your floats is set higher than the other or has a hole in it.

And yeah, second everything Blaaster said.

Alright, I parked the blaster and I am picking up parts for a leak tester and a compression tester a arrives tomorrow as well. I'll let you know the results.
