im trying to reseal my cases and in the process wanted to go ahead and replace rings. does anyone use a hone for the cylinder before new rings? if so what kind and what size. it is a big bore currently 72 mm (std). i cant get a new forged piston kit for it so i figured this would be the next best thing to get the compression back to where it was when i first put it together. thanks for any help

if at all possible measure the clearance between the piston and the wall if any. If the compression is really low then I would bore/hone it to the next size up.
its not really that low just not the same as it was when i first put it together (170psi) and now its like (140) i found a air leak between the cases so while i have it appart i was going to do this...
you need to measure the bore to see if there is still enough room to hone. or if you are guessing, a real quick ball hone. (like two strokes in and out just to get the cross hatching) by no means is this the proper way to do it but like i said, if your just going to guess at it you can do it this way
i doubt i have over 100 hrs on the bike and always keep a clean air filter so yes im guessing that its not over the service limit. i dont have the tools for measuring the exact size of the bore but there are no visual signs of wear in the cylinder and i think a quick hone would be exactly what it needs to reseat some fresh rings. probably not the professional way to do it. so if one wer to hone a cylinder would they opt for 3 stone type or flexhone style? and what size?
I have a 3 stone and the ball type and i can't tell the difference in the quality of the hone. you can pick up the ball type from rockymountainatv.com for cheap.
