How do you tell what is "normal" and what is "excessive" when it comes to crank play?

I remember reading that side to side was ok but up and down play was bad?

Is that correct? And what would be considered too much side to side play?

Thanks guys!! :D

get a feeler gauge.. Stick it into the gap in between the crank and the side of the con rod..
Hot Rods recommends in between 0.5 and 0.7 mm of play.. In practice your engine can run fine with up to 1mm or more, but keep an eye on it.. anything more than 1mm is too much according to any manufacturer, but your engine will run fine, the clearance is meant to be small to keep the con rod from twisting at high speeds. twisting will cause the bearings to wear out faster, but is unlikely to cause the rod to fatigue and crack. hope that helps.
