my piston got all chewed up so i gotta crack the cases to clean all the metal bits outta the bottom end.
i've never done this before so the best way i can think to do this is to pull it apart and "rinse" the parts in a bucket of oil w/ a big magnet at the bottom of it......anybody got any better ideas? is parts cleaner the better way to go? will that get all the fine bits of metal shavings off all the small parts and outta all the nooks and crannies?

a rinse with oil then just wiping it all down is fine i think. but have you ever split the cases? its a biotch if you dont have the tools, trust me, i just did it. first you need an arbour press to press out the cranks, might as well through some new main bearings in there and seals. so you gota sweat those in. then geting the crank back in is the tricky part if you dont have tools. this is how i did it.

the tool pulls thwe crank in without all this sh*t i did lol.

you can try something like that. its a bit fidely but it works with patients and going slow. or buy the tool for 70 bucks or something. forgot to mention, the other side just taps on. you may have to give it some swing in the malet but it will go.

damn, dude, that's pretty inventive.
i've never done it before, but i found a site (SportingForLess-Motorcycle parts, accessories & tools.) that sells most of the tools needed pretty cheap. case splitter's only $50, and i'm gonna probably get a puller, but those aren't sold there so they're a little more expensive.
you know a cheap place to get the bearings and seals?

i would say you dont need the spliter, in my opinion. yo u can easily tap it apart, then tap the one side on. but thats pretty cheap, might as well. but you defently need a crank puller/instaler tool. and bearings, just look around. All balls racing bearing kits are good.
