Yeah it doesn't take long for some side to side action.
Up and down play means a catastrophic failure is coming soon.
Best way to test for up and down play is to pull the rod all the way up.
Hold it with one hand and bang the other hand on top of it.
If you hear a tink sound then you might wanna think about having your crank re-built.

Go to your shop manual. It will show you how to jig up a dial indicator to measure small end radial play. This is the best way assess the condition of the big end bearing.
Another quick way is pull off the stator cover and try to giggle the flywheel, if it moves its time for a bottom end rebuild.
that would just show wornout crank bearings..not the connecting rod bearing..
