I am putting a new clutch in the ball either did not come out
or was not there to begin with. Is there a way to know if it
is in there. Seems like the shaft had to go in more than I
would have expected with a new clutch to get it to
engage / disengage so that it felt like it would work.

The reason I am suspecting that the ball is missing is that with the
ring, kind of like a spacer that was in the old clutch (not sure if I need it or not)
in place there shaft will not push the plate out enough for the clutch to disengage

Same thing happened to me.... you have to adjust the push rod on the pressure plate out more.... Just take off the nut and screw the rod out a little and try it again. it might take a couple times to get it adjusted right.... I have pic's too if you need them

When I take the extra ring, looks like a spacer plate out then I can adjust it so that the clutch seems to work, is that thing necessary?

thanks for the help, ended up using and allen wrench attached to magnet,
ball bearing was in there. Kept adjusting finally got clutch adjusted, ended up not using the wavey spring washer, would not disengage with it in there no matter how I adjusted it. Seems to work fine without it.
