Hey I was wondering if I should bother cleaning the 400ex shock I bought. If soo what parts should I clean. and is there anyway to get the spring off to clean on the parts inside of it? or does it not if you clean in there?

Thanks

Heres what my shock looks like:

Yep you can get it off.... If you unthread the preload ALL the way you may be able to push the spring down enough (toward the reservior) to remove the 2 pieces of retainer (BE VERY CAREFUL). and after that it all just slides off... It helps to have 2 people doing it... One to compress the sprig, and one to get the retainers off... Keep your fingers out though.

Or you COULD build something like this:

:-) got fed up trying to get springs off shocks using the old "hold there a minute more Kevin and let me ge this keeper in!" method and trying to take off heads and such SO i got some 1/2" all thread, some 1/2" nuts, a few 1/4" NPT long nipples that I drilled the center out to 1/2", and some 1/2" wide flat strapping. :-)

They work VERY well.

PS nvm the shocks in the picture, bayou shocks I was respringing...

I bought a set from harbor freight for doing car springs but the hooks were too large go against the shock body on a quad spring. They were..... unstable because as soon as the hook slid past the shock body, the spring would then settle into the lowest part of the hook and they could er.... slip during that process.

The spring compressors I made have hooks on the end that are about 1/4" in diameter so it grabs a quad spring just fine.
