We bought a used '04 about two weeks ago that wouldnt' run right. Turns out it had a broken tors wire and after I fixed that it runs like a scalded dog. Now this is my 3rd blaster, the 1st one was junk and I was new to quads. The 2nd was stock and decent. Then I had a 400ex bored to 416, higher comp piston, XR400 cam, full FMF exhaust, etc and it ran good. But this blaster friggin rips. So I'm trying to figure out why since I got it used and don't know what's been done to the motor. I do know it has a full FMF exhaust and a foam type air filter. Also there is no cover on the air filter, is it supossed to have a lid? Anyways this thing has a pretty broad powerband, I would say from 1/4 throttle thru 3/4 it pulls like crazy and sounds awesome. So my question is: can a stock bore blaster with a good pipe and maybe proper jetting run this good? Seriously, I have ridden quote a bit and this thing really impresses me with the power it's got, and the fact that the powerband seems fairly broad.
Can a pipe make that much differnece?

but seriously it could be someone actually knew what they were doing tuning wize..keep in mind though it could be fine tuned for hot summer and could be running dangerously lean at the moment.

Good point on the running lean, I need to check the plug asap. I had been wondering if it was running too good to be true and was going to blow up! It doesn't help that it's my kids blaster and he rides it pretty cautiously, but I get on it and ride it like it's stolen

lol you beat me to it.They always run the best right before they blow up.Like said it may have some porting but a pipe does make a good difference.
last one I locked up was 29 years ago I forgot to add oil under the seat..yamaha Gt80 that at the time was the worst day ever. I was riding up a logging trail and it would hardly go and I down shifted all the way to first it slowly lost rpms till it locked down. Since I have not blown or locked anything up..knock on wood
blasters can be built to haul @55... I have one MX blaster w/ porting, PT pipe, 34PJ, head mod, and one all stock blaster. If you rode the stocker and then rode the MX, you would swear there was a motor swap or something, the MX motor is in a class all its own with no resemblence to the stock motor powerband.
Help me out here some, I'm somewhat a noob here with blasters. What is a 34PJ (carb?) and what is the head mod? ALso what is a PT pipe, is PT a brand?

yes a 34 pj is a carb.... it stands for 34mm power jet.....the pt stands for paul turner pipe and the head mod is a reshaping of the badly designed stock blaster head.....ask all the ?? u need bro thats what we are here for
actually I probably misspoke when I said head mod.. it has a shaved head/cylinder to increase compression, but I dont believe any actual work was done to the shape of the head (motor was built in 92 or so, can you say "old school" ? )
I wouldnt really recommend my setup for most people. It has nearly zero bottom end, but once it gets on the pipe, it moves. I'd like to try a different pipe or smaller carb to see if that helps, but other projects to fix first.
