hi new here, recently bought a '02 that was burning crankcase oil. After browsing here i figured it must be the clutch side crank seal. So i replaced the crank seal, after towing it with another quad to pop start it ran but blew helaciuos amounts of white smoke and had oil blowing out of the exhaust. Is there anything else i can check before having to do a complete tear down and case split? Thanks for your help.

did you......

run it long enuf to blow out all the excess that may have been laying in the bottom end, pipe and silencer ?

fill it with 650ml of trans oil, check the level in the sight glass and did it use any of that up ?

use yamabond between the sleeve (what the inner part of the seal rides on) and crank
yamabond can seal that sleeve to the crank if it's worn

towing it with another quad is suspicious
ngk b8es spark plug
is oil injection still on it,or are you pre mixing?
compression test?
leak test will tell you if it is still leaking:)

Thanks for the replies, i didnt know about sealing the sleeve to the seal with yamabond.
Motor has a new piston and ring. Has a b-8 plug and oil injection is gone.
What is the leak test procedure?

yamabond between the sleeve and crank, not between the seal and sleeve.

why does it have a new piston ?............. that possibility the old one dropped a skirt into the bottom end and broke thru the cases between crank and trans/clutch area ?

a leakdown test will confirm this, yeah or nay

leakdown test:

I asked if the old piston had grenaded in the cylinder but the guy(who is a co worker) said he the old one was fine and he just changed it because he wanted to freshen it up. Looks like time to dig deeper!

compression and leakdown test before digging any further, both tell the tale and pinpoint problems before tearing it down. neither can be done afterwards.

Not sure what this means, but compression test was 75psi
I couldnt do a leak down test since i couldn't even get it to hold pressure. I have the clutch and the crank gear off and it doesnt seem like the air is leaking around the crank seal. If air was leaking into the crankcase wouldnt it come out the breather hose when i am pumping air into the motor?

75 psi would explain having to tow it.
should be around 120 psi
you held throttle wide open and kicked till it stopped rising right?

yes, use a short piece of temp hose in place of the original one and submerge the end in a cup of soapy water, then pump the air to it, if it's leaking into clutch/trans area it will blow bubbles out test hose

I ended up folding over the tube and clamping it with vise grips but still couldnt get it to hold air

Today I tried putting the crank breather in water and sure enough when I pumped air in bubbles came out in the water...
So I pulled the motor out and started disassembling it. First thing I noticed was that the piston seemed way to small for the cylinder (see pic). Cylinder measures-2.620. Piston measures-2.575 image.jpg

Once I got the piston out I looked down in the crankcase and found this

It's hard to see but there is a hole in the stator side crankcase half.

So do I try to fix it or find a good used one?

Find a good used one for a few bucks, and if you want to save more money fix it with some epoxy:D
i think it will hold.
You can't even trust your co workers anymoreo_O
