a break down of the oil allows the piston rings and piston to come into contact with the cylinder wall, as the cylinder wears the bore becomes larger and allows the piston to rock back and forth slightly in the cylinder.
add to that the added heat of blow by from worn rings and the pison becones weaker and if allowed to " slap the cylinder walls" it will everntually break off the skirt.

remember the piston itself should never actually touch the cylinder (metal on metal) a micro film of oil seperates the two.

This is why you should not run the engine with low compression or use cheap oils. A good synthetic oil will allow your engine to perform better and last a lot longer
