My quad was not shifting up past second but it would go down to first I took of the one side as if I were gonna replace the clutch and one of the fingers( most likely not the right terminology) was cracked off and missing off the clutch basket so I ordered a new clutch basket and when I picked it up from my local shop the guy there said what piece cracked off can be stuck under the shift drum and can be the reason it won't shift? Any other ideas? I am really dreading splitting the cases in order to get it out any input would be greatly appreciated thanks

Well, why did it break off in the first place??? I guess it could get under the drum, if it did i don't see any way of fishing it out of there. If when you removed the cover that broken piece isn't there, It had to go somewhere!

I would split the cases clean it all out, check the shift forks see if they are bent, as that is usually the problem when they don't shift right!

there isn't a big enough hole for the finger to get into the trans. Does the break on the basket look fresh? Or dis colored/dull? Could be previous owner broke it? Check shift star, external shift mechinism. Check shift shaft for straightness. Look behind basket for finger. Was there a lot of alum shavings in the clutch cover/side?

Looks on the dull side and shift star is fine no shavings any where and I am pretty shift fork isn't bent either

When you drained oil was it overly metalic silverly looking? A fresh break would still have been shiny. Are the fingers on the basket on the basket grooved deeply? That alone could cause poor shifting.

Didn't really look at the grooves but no metallic oil that was the first thing I looked at
