Blaster Vs. Polaris Preadator

Hello all! Last weekend I went to the local pit to ride with the locals, and I got the chance to ride a Polaris predator (500cc's i think they are). I absolutely hated it. The wheelbase felt way too short. The wheeler was way too squirly, the back end wanted to slide all over the place. It had maxxis razrs on it i believe. At the same time I was riding in sand, but it still felt way too unstable. Has anybody ever ridden a predator? I only mention this because a blaster's wheelbase is even shorter than a predator and seems like it would have worse handling than a predator. Now I'm glad that I got the TTR-250. Who would like to chime in on this subject?

Maybe I got "wheelbase" mixed up. I am implying the length from the front wheels to the back wheels, not the width of the wheeler. The predator seemed as wide as the banshees I saw in the pit though

Maybe I just don't know how to ride quads... LOL

The predator had plenty of power I just didn't like the handling. I think I'll just stick to bikes, but I would still like to try out a blaster because I just seem to have an attraction to them even though i've never driven one or even heard one in person...

Just out of curiosity how did you become a member and come up with the name 96blasteryfs200? Not trying to be rude or anything I was just wondering. You should buy one, you'll love it!

Sensitive subject...I will give you the story.

My stupid decision! I had a mint 2000 Polaris 600 xc sp about 2 years ago. I really wanted a blaster, but it was nearing the end of the snowmobile season so nobody wanted to trade their blaster for my snowmobile. I found someone who agreed to trade. Their blaster had nerfs, fmf exhaust, vforce 3 reeds, nerfs, and a spare frame, "all it needed was a piston and rings". The bike was also in pieces. I made the trade, just to find out that the guy who had the bike before me never took care of it, so it blew up every month. No air filter, it didn't even have vforce3 reeds, the reeds were junk, the cases were full of dirt due to no air filter, the carb had no air screw, the cylinder needed to be bored and honed, needed new bearings and bushings all the way around. I wound up selling it a month later for $185. 2 years ago, still kicking myself over it...

My cousin has one and I agree on the wheelbase. but the predator 500 is a beast has a great torque i like that atv and ( sure it will slide all over the place. It had maxxis razrs on the sand :D)

Me and my brother have stock length blasters and they are fine. Our friend has a predator and his brother has a 400ex. You just get used to one quad and stay with that one, which is probably why you thought it was weird riding it... I don't like the predator IMO, but the 400ex is nice(mainly cause it has awesome shocks lol)

How does the blaster compare to the predator handling and power wise? say if a blaster has all the nice motor mods minus being bored or having a BBK

Well one is a 500 and the blaster a 200 so obviously a big size difference. The predators a 4 stroke the blaster a 2 there not very comparable in any way in my opinion.other than both having 4 wheels.. I wouldn't want to start with a predator as a first quad but a blaster definitely yes.. Imo there the best first quad out there and i still have two today and love them.. I see you live in N.Y... if ever your in my area give me a call I'll let you take one of mine for a ride and you will fall in love with the blaster even more..

mildly modded blaster...35+ hp, 300 lbs.
stock predator..............40-42 hp, 415 lbs

power to weight ratio = blaster all day long.
mx track/tight trails = blaster all day long
top speed/open areas only = predator

I was thinking the Predator 500's made closer to 50hp. One weekend, some friends were here with their quads. I rode them all, TRX450, LT450R and a Predator 500. The 500 had a noticeable power advantage everywhere,,,,and IMO had the better suspension for blasting through the fields around the house. For MX or hard riding on rough trails, the LT or TRX would have probably been better. Another thing was I had helped set up the suspension on the 500, the owner and I are the same weight.
As far as power to weight between a Blaster and Predator, the Blaster feels 200 pounds lighter when it comes to throwing it around. And as we all know, 2 strokes are much more reliable than 4 strokes. That helps allot, Whenever I ride a 4 stroke, I have to be easy on them, I don't want to break it and have to pay for on of those $1000+ topends.

My previous quad was a 660 Raptor, and I have to really agree with Awk08 on his view.
The Blaster even in stock form is the king of tight woods trails. Light weight and nimble handling let it go anywhere.
The weight and length of the bigger machines make them suck in the woods, but better at speed.
A stock Blaster is fun, but no comparison to a Raptor or Predator.
Spend less than $100 on a head mod to get over 30hp and the game changes quickly!

As for handling, tires and suspension setup can make a big difference in handling.
Buy the wrong tires or have the toe in wrong and you have a squirrely machine.

As for lengthening and widening, it does make the Blaster more stable at the expense of nimbleness.
For trail use, I like the stock width. 2" extra width makes a world of difference when squeezing between rocks or trees.
I stand on it and plant my weight with my feet. On cornering all my weight is on the inside peg.
With over 40hp on tap I felt I needed to extend my swingarm. Even with a 2" extension the bike is still prone to flipping over on hillclimbs.
The longer the swingarm the harder it is to loft the front over logs on slippery surfaces or with worn tires.

With a good working Blaster you have no need to fear keeping up to a Predator or Raptor on tight trails.
Even the in the open a good working Blaster will run close enough with these bigger machines.

Some guys have to have a big machine to make up for deficiencies in their own personal life. Me? I am OK with my deficiencies. :)

I have woods and nice trails all around me. However, some of the better trails require 3-8 mile stretches to get to. I see that being a problem if I were to get any two stroke, whereas my 4 stroke can maintain a nice cruising speed down these long stretches. I just put that into consideration...

Id never own a predator, ive rode 3 diff ones and was never impressed. They got decent power but thats about it. one of my friends just sold his because there was always something messing up on it, he got a z400 and is way happier with it.
