blaster faster/better than 400ex

OK... So my blaster has been sitting in my barn for years now. head off. (needs top end re-build) brakes (upgrade to hydrolic). low end is probably fine. no play or slop in crank/rod.

Now we have the 400ex/raptor 700/yfz450 then dirt bikes (cr80r/rm125/ktm 50 senior).

we have two blasters. one runs. its a turd comparatively to EVERYTHING else that we have. However the top end could be worn (no compression test yet etc) but still a turd. However, last time we went out on the ORV trails I rode the blaster because my buddies daughter was tired of trying to kick the blaster (she is 12) so I let her ride the 400.

Anyway, I smoked everyone on the ORV trails on the blaster. even my buddy riding the raptor 700. its just to big. you cant throw it around and get through the narrow/banky/moguls/trees. we were talking about it and if we modded the blasters and rode them we would be untouchable in the tight stuff. and probably have allot more fun. Now, when we got out on the seasonal roads we would absolutely get stomped.

well, is it possible for a modded blaster to still be reliable but be able to out run a 400ex atleast until the blaster topped out? I know the legs are longer on the 400, but if I could make a blaster reliably faster than my 400 it would be to much fun!

possible? reliably? (when we ride we will do 50+ miles in a day).

The Blaster modded is very reliable. Porting, head mod and an aftermarket pipe you will not believe the power increase. With all those mods you will want to upgrade handling. Widen the front end by flipping the front rims. Look for some works shocks for the front. A 400 Ex shock is a big improvement over stock, with KOR bushings. Widen the rear with an aftermarket axle or one off of a Banshee. Extended swing arm will help keep your front end down.

The sky is the limit. Unfortunately most of us are limited by our wallets.

If you're not going through water or deep mud you may want to let her breath a little bit more by removing the airbox lid. Besure to up your jetting though. With proper maintenance and a good 2 stroke oil these little machines are very reliable. Just as reliable as any other 2 stroke out there. With the mods listed above these little things really wake up and are a "blast" ;) in the trails..

I got a bbk with KOR porting and head rechambered with a pipe and as long as you do all the little things like leak down checks now and again and get your tuning right it's a very reliable machine so far my machine has been the best among all the people I ride with and they looked at me like I was crazy riding that kids quad but I run right along with them in the woods
Definitely +1 on the suspension stuff and hydro brakes the bbk is kinda a waste as well should have stayed with the stock bore but I bought it before I found this forum and KOR

I believe that tight trails are where my blaster shines. ALL of my friends have 400ex and one has a 450r. They cant keep up with me on the blaster in the trials, UNLESS there is a decent straight, then they whoop on me. But if I can keep it on the pipe, they are toast.

Ive had both....it really depends where you ride...me..
Open area deep sand , hard packed 1/5 mile dirt track....400ex Tight trails light mud ,loose 1/5 mile dirt track ...Blaster. Steep hills , about even .

yeah i agree with rich. I rip on the blaster on tight trails where me and the blaster make a good weight/muscle combo. I can really throw her around. I have a friend on a raptor 440 and he is big enough to toss the raptor's weight around, him and I are a dead heat. but you get us ANYWHERE where he can carry speed through the corners, well let's just say he gets to start drinking before me.
