We picked up a 2001 blaster over the weekend.

It needs top end rebuilt. Plan on taking the cylinder to the machien shop soon to get bored.

Since the guy I bought it from, bought it this way also and never fixed it, it just has sat.

So, he could not answer some of my questions. And some I did not to think to ask at the time.

The blaster came with extra pipes / mufflers, fmf and another one, Forget the name. and the stock pipe and muffler.

What I do not know, is what was on it.

So, was thinking im gonna have to take the car off and see what jet is in there.

What number will I see on the jet, if it is a stock jet ?

Now I have not torn down the engine, just looked at the rod and took off the piston and looked at the rod / piston bearing.

Rotated the rod / crankshaft and all seems well. smooth, no up or down slop.

Some side to side slop, but within spec, from the manual I downloaded.

Allot to read, and I need to read it, like 3 more times, to start retaining more of the info.

Now I have only re-did a snowmobile 2 cycle years ago and more recently a 4 stroke top end on my other atv.

I did not recall reading anything, about top dead center for the two stroke. And want to make sure. Im not missing something here.

But I was thinking, I did not have to worry about this, since it is a 2 stroke with reeds, instead of valves.

This blaster is going to be my step sons and he dont need a fmf pipe and header on it. so i plan on putting the stock on it, if it wasnt already on it.

As the jug and pipe was already off. my guess, when they locked it up. took of the jub and pipe, but then just wrapped up the motor and did nothing more with it. lol

The story I got, was the guy that owned it, bought it new. and was riding in the winter and it locked up on him.

But i do not know as I mentioned, if he put a fmf pipe on it or what, just that it came with the purchase of the blaster.

This thing is pretty darn clean and in good shape, not much wear. the other part of the story was, the guy had it new for abotu 1 and 1/2 years, when it locked up in winter and it sat, until the guy i bought it from got it and it sat another 2 to 3 years.

So, im not really sure on what really caused it to lock up, or what he did or didnt do.

When I took the cylinder head off of the jug, I was surprised how good of shape it was in, not allot of carbon

So, thats about all I can share with you 4 now.

But was wondering, other than the carb jet screw on what number it might sat, to look for, to ensure it's right.

Anything else I should look at ?

I see no obvious lower end damage or issue with rod play or bearing issues for the lower unit.

Rotates, smooth and well and easily and I feel not slop. by turning balancer by hand and holding top of rod. several times.

/\ x2 on that, and probably what your gonna find is it was run with the fmf and stock 230 jet, couple in cold winter air = guarenteed fried piston/seizure

The FMF pipe will perform better than the stock heavy baffled choke hold! Make sure the machine shop will chamfer the ports if it gets bored. Put a 280 jet in that carb with the FMF/ air screw 1.5 turns out from fully in, and no lid on air box or vented air box. Before any carb adjustments are made, I would toss in a rebuild kit on the carb and adjust the float to proper level of 20-21.5mm see Awk08 sig for proper way to check float level.

I dub into a few things this morning.

The carb does have the stock 230 jet. The car is very clean and I do not think it needs evening a rebuild kit. maybe cleaned some, maybe. its really clean.

Took a look at the oil pump, it pumps well, gears work. did not take off main cover. but did take pump off. I will say the oil is nasty, not blueish like it should be, more liek thin runny dark colored. So Im gonna drain the take and clean and replace with new stuff.

Im gonna run tye cylinder over to the shop. I'll see what he all says on the chamfer, hes a really good machine shop. Does all my stuff.

Stock reeds look really good also.

If I decide to use the fmf / fatty. I am missing the flange, where do i get a flange for it ?

I would put in proper jet screw. but i will not leave the air filter box cover off.

This is for my 11 year old step son, hes gonna be happy just trail riding and light riding.

I just got back from dropping off the jug / aka cylinder.

He does chamfer anytime he does a bore job.

He suggested I replace the crank shaft seals. They were a known issue for the blaster. anytime it sits for awhile. or about 7 years he said replace them.
Is there any videos to watch on replacing the cranksahft seals ?
