I have a 88 blaster. it is stock for the most part. I believe the guy i got it from rebuilt the top end and took it to a full 200cc instead of 195cc. other then that its stock. The thing was running great then i went to college. so it sat in my garage for a couple months but i made sure i closed everything up drained the tank, carb, new oil etc. etc.... this whole thing started when i noticed the carb top was stripped. so i replaced it and the new one is somewhat better but i think the threads are stripped on the carb body. but its snug enough now to where i don't think it might be effecting it.

My problem is that it is very hard to get started and if it finally starts it will rev up very, very high and then die. it revs up so high i have to turn it off to keep it from over reving. if it doesn't over rev i have to keep giving it gas to keep it going but it will soon die even when pulsing the gas. it also is backfiring.
I've cleaned the carb totally three times, cleaned and flushed the fuel tank, did a full electrical troubleshoot, replaced the reeds and gasket, cleaned the petcock, 220 main jet, jet needle in the middle groove, all other jets are up to manual specs, throttle cable seems to be right and the idle speed switch is working.
i am lost as to what to look for/do next other then buy new stuff and see if that fixes it. i have noticed some fuel leaking from the intake manifold and the reed cage. maybe i am sucking air in there? the only things i noticed in my electrical was that the pick up coil was reading low on ohms than what it should be. could this be it? HELP PLEASE!

the engine gets compression but idk how much. It blows my finger off the hole when someone kickes it over. I haven't removed the TORS because idk if it will screw anything else up. I did however test the TORS switch above the carb and it is working. so idk. and yes i have replaced the pulg. I get a good spark when i kick it over. the plug is somewhat wet when i pull it after i can get it started. 89 custom, what type of carb would you recomend to replace my stock one? i'd rather just get a sweet new carb instead of replacing with a stock one

I have a bigger carb than stock and have no expierence with the stock carb but i Know on mine I have 3 hose fittings 1 for fuel and the other two im not sure what there for but if I plug them off the motor will over rev dont know if yours are plugged but that sounds like what mine done. I just put a long piece of vinyl hose on it and tucked the other end into my air box

yea i dont think thats it because i've blown out all the passages with air and nothing was clogged up. well it was the frist time cuz there was some old gas in the tank...but everything is clean now. sometimes when connect the fuel hose up to the tank and turn it on no fuel flows up until i drain the float. then the fuel will flow through the hose. so idk if there is some kinda of vaccum gong on thats not supposed to be there or what. but i know its getting some kinda of fuel because it does start some times and the plug is wet when i pull it. i just can't pin point what it might be

id say your slide is sticking and not seating alll the way down lube it (and the throttle cable )and visibly adjsut it so it doesnt ride o nthe body wall also be sure theres no kinks in the cable or any issues or restrcitions with the mechnaical action of the slide movement .just a hunch to check out

clean your airfilter and carb really well besure theres no problems with your timing so check the flywheel key ot be sure its still intact and not sheared or anything ,get fresh fuel and new plug too

how do you adjust the timing? is this a common thing to happen on them? air filter and all that is good. all the basic inspections and specs are good. My pick up coil was reading low on ohms tho.

any body have any other advice for this? haven't had a chance to check the timing yet. its still doing the same thing. I am doing a carb rebuild but if that doesn't work does any have any suggestions for a good aftermarket quad for a stock mildly modded engine?

just if any has any other advise on what might be causing my symptoms....first post explains it all....i just dont know where to look any more...i also was wondering if anyone has any advice on a good aftermarket carb to pick up with my rebuild doesn't work

Definitely sounds carb related. I would find a friend with a good running blaster and try his carb. It takes less than 10 minutes to swap. My guess is that yours will start 2nd kick and run perfect.

You could be sucking air in through your crank seal. You can test it yourself by spraying some WD40 into the flywheel while the motor is running. This is kind of dangerous and you definately want to stay back and do this outside. The spray may ignite from the spark and make a small fireball. You can also have a shop do a leak down test to see if you are leaking compression. I had a motorcycle that did this and it was the crank seal on the flywheel side. The plug could be wet because your losing so muuch compression through the seal that it can't ignite properly. I hope this helps.

yea thanks thats something no one has suggested yet. my main problem is that it just wont stay running to do any of these leak tests. i have to hit the gas jsut to keep it goin so it would be hard to tell if the RPMs increase.

I don't think it has to run for the shop to do a leak down test. They would use gauges and some way to put pressure into the combustion chamber.
