So I think I'm going to be gettin a blaster this weekend and am way excited, I wanna build it up but want some advice before I do so.. so I'm gettin it for $300 has paddle and dirt tires and the engine is a 250(bored and stroked I guess) however there is tranny problems.. I also have an xr600 I will be selling.. now I was debating about swapping in my xr6 engine, its brand new.. but I really wanna be able to hit big jumps with this when its done and I'm afraid that big of an engine will snap the frame in half (I will be upgrading the suspension for sure) but I wanna know if I'd be better off selling the whole xr6 bike to fund my upgrades, I have a 98 kx250 engine for $400 I could get and drop it in.. or maybe shop around for a cr500 engine.. if I stay two stroke can I keep the original ignition unit? And do you think these would be better then using my xr6 engine? Also where can I get extended a arms for a decent price? I will be welding the swing arm probably +6.. any other advice is great thanks

I also have the option to get a 400ex that is almost rolling, its missing the rear axle and tie rods, its $300 also, I think I'd have better luck fitting my xr600 in it, but would that be better then the blaster, even if I dropped in the kx250?

i would not do any swaps until you've actually experienced a properly built blaster engine.
you'll be surprised at what can be brought out of these with the right builder and matching bolt on mods.

I used ride one of these when I was a kid and loved it.. since he already has it bored and stroked I do.want to fix the tranny and see how I like, figured I could sell to recover a little, but I'm gonna keep it in there so I can ride till I'm ready for the swap, but I think ill want a little more, my other bikes are a turboed cafe racer, a Honda v65 1100(muscle bike) and a pretty modded cr250, if I can get acceleration like my cr250, I think ill be happy, but I also think I'd be more happy with more power swing as I'm on 4 wheels now.. I'm a power hungry invincible kid lol.. even if though, this is still a good deal that I should jump on right?

How hard would it be to squeeze a kx500 engine in a blaster frame? I may have just got an in on one for a good deal, it'd be balls fast, but would it still handle good?

Any things possible with some fab work. Fitting the pipe is the hardest part. Anytime you upgrade you need a better suspension. Longer and wider.

Oh ya, I will defiantly be widening the whole thing and upgrading the suspension for sure.. I guess my real concern is if its to small for my 5'11 180lb frame, and I live jumping, I don't wanna crack a frame in half, although a used frame isn't to pricey if I do, and I've been reading on where I can weld on supports

gusset the frame. a 250 pipe is hard to make fit a blaster. i cant imagine a 500 pipe. i saw on another site, someone took the down tubes, cut them free frome the bottom tubes and bent them forward. making room for the pipes.

If you have to ask the question you might just not have the skills to pull it off yet.
Listen to AWK08's advice. Building a strong stock Blaster is a lot easier than solving all the problems a swap brings. Most swaps never get finished.

or they get to a point where they get stuck, than half ass it. creating something dangerous. not saying it will happen here, just saying an engine swap is not easy.

I agree on the engine swap. I would do a DT200 (is it a DR?) before anything else. A CR500 doesnt have a counterbalancer and has been known to crack frames from vibrations. I know nothing about a KX500 except for knowing that you're going to have 90% of the same problems as a CR. However, you aren't going to crack a frame unless you really give it hell or do a hell of a hack job. Even then, it isn't going to be from the extra engine weight.

If you're hell bent on it, we can help you, but we can't help you any more than you want to be helped.

My personal recommendation for making gobs of power would be a 240 kit with a stroker crank, built by KOR or another guy. If you need more after that, send the head and carb back to KOR and tell him you want to run a 25/75 mix of nitromethane and C16. If it isn't enough then... well, we'll cross that bridge if it ever comes.

Another consideration is the money it costs. Every time I think I know what it's gonna cost to build something, I double it. Even then, I tend to be underestimating the end cost.

my cr125 build cost more than i thought it would.

What is your desired end state? That should be identified before you buy anything.

there is tranny problems
Uh oh. Details? I generally stay away from these.

I also have an xr600 I will be selling.. now I was debating about swapping in my xr6 engine, its brand new..
If you don't want it, sell it for funding.

I really wanna be able to hit big jumps with this when its done
How big? Suspension mods should be planned.

I'm afraid that big of an engine will snap the frame in half
If that's a concern, take it to a different fabricator/welder.

I wanna know if I'd be better off selling the whole xr6 bike to fund my upgrades
See above.

I have a 98 kx250 engine for $400 I could get and drop it in..
Need electrical, carb, and pipe to even have a decent start. Also, what condition is this engine?

or maybe shop around for a cr500 engine..
That's a lot of power for stock geometry, even with a longer swingarm and wider a-arms and axle.

if I stay two stroke can I keep the original ignition unit?
99/100, no.

And do you think these would be better then using my xr6 engine?
In every aspect, except for exhaust work, yes.

Also where can I get extended a arms for a decent price?
Buy used from a reputable seller. Wait around and be persistent. They'll pop up.

I will be welding the swing arm probably +6
Goes back to the first question. That's quite a stretch. Have you worked out the spring rates needed for that?
