Axle

So I've ripped apart the rear end to check the bearings, haven't gotten in there yet, but I have found some other issues. There is axle nuts on 1 side (the sprocket side) of the carrier, and they are loose, so I tightened them up, but on the other side, where the brake disc is, there is no axle nuts or threads to put them on. the disc was just sitting on the splines with nothing to hold it in place. is this the way it should be?

yup, it just floats there, the caliper holds it in place, it floats back and forth when the caliper is compressed/released

and if I take the chain off, the axle should slide right out of the carrier?

no, it'll take some love with the hammer after taking the nuts, sprocket hub, and wheel hub off. you'll hammer it towards the brake side


make sure to use a deadblow or put a block of wood between the hammer and the axle or you'll fubar the threads

there should also be a rubber boot on each side of the disc hub, to keep the dirt out, they actually sit in grooves and have a clip that holds them and the disc in place
