My 4L Ford Explorer didn't take the trip to Awks very well. I'm pretty sure it's got a blown head gasket and a bad crank and bearings. Probably had something to do with towing 3 Blasters and a 500LB gorilla named Tarmo in the back seat. A buddy is pulling the engine today and I'm planning on rebuilding it. Where's a good place to get automotive engine parts? Looks like a full rebuild kit is going to run about $800. Any Service Managers in the house?

Was it mixing coolant in with the oil or actually running hot?

The 4.0 explorer's were bad about the timing chain rubbing the cover until the rubbed a hole through the coolant jacket. As soon as there was a hole the coolant would drain into the oil pan mimicking a blown head gasket except that replacing the head gaskets wouldn't fix the problem. Most owners would get frustrated after a few head jobs at "incompetent" shops who couldn't handle a simple head gasket replacement and purchase a whole rebuilt engine to replace theirs. Which, of course, would fix the problem but only because jasper (or whatever rebuilding service did the work) had already seen that problem a bunch of times and had learned to check the timing cover when the 4.0's come in and see if it needs replacement.

If coolant is mixing with the oil, make sure you check out the front motor cover under the timing chain. There may be some rub marks...

Hey bro check summit racing, might have to call. 1-800-230-3030. I know most rebuild kits are around the $400 mark.

For cylinder heads check Clearwater cly head/ Odessa cyl head in clearwater ,fla. Got a set for my son's Ranger. Cast in Austrailia, beefed up where prone to cracking. This is an OHV, not OHCam. Hope this helps. Company may be under either or both names on E-gay. Great pricing and service. Beat Autozone and local parts on price by about 100%.
