Autolube Pump Leaking... I think.

Hey, everyone. I just joined. You seem like a knowledgeable bunch of people... Maybe you can help me out.

I just picked up a 96 Blaster, which runs very well and feels quite strong, and I'm running 32:1 premix. After about 3 hours (over two days or so) of running time, it started leaking what looks alot like 2-stroke oil (kinda reddish in color) all over the ground. I traced the leak to the split between the case and the right side engine cover- right where the autolube pump is... I think. It leaks from the rounded part of the cover on the front face of the engine. What can be done to stop this leak? I don't want to start tearing the thing down unless I have to. The oil tank is about half full- I'll watch to see if that goes down, making sure that's what's bleeding out, but will this stop if I empty that tank?
I read something about a block-off kit. What will that get me and how do I install it?

To tell you the truth, I don't know. The guy I got it from said it was plugged (not sure how he knew that) and that he'd been using premix. I just filled the (gas)tank with 32:1 and it doesn't smoke any more than anything else I'd ever used 32:1 with, so I figure the system doesn't work, but it's still leaking. It doesn't smell like transmission oil, you know?

I just went out to check the Yamalube reservoir and it's down to 1/4 full. It was 1/2 full this morning. will it stop leaking when it runs itself dry? I need to disable the pump so it doesn't eat itself, don't I?

yes get rid of the pump, it is very simple to do! it is obviously letting tranny fluid leak out of the case, because with out 2 cycle oil running threw it, it prob siezed up and broke the little plastic gear inside, which is where ur oil could be leaking from

The oil pump block off kit is fairly simple, and give alot of peace of mind.. With it you will toatally remove the pump, the gear/shaft, and the tank itself along with all those hoses involved.

The kit gives you a new case gasket, block off plate/gasket, a small line cap for the carb, and new bolts for the block off plate itself. We used TM blockoff kit, and it came with pretty detailed instructions. You will need to have some fresh fluid for your crankcase, some clear or black RTV, and a little mechanical knowledge. It is a simple process that should not take too long to do.

Getting rid of the pump itself and mixing your gas will possibly save you alot of headaches. Good luck, and yeas I agree with you when you say there is ALOT of great knowledgeable people on here who are willing to help out... It is a great resource.

So if the gear broke apart, where do the pieces go? They're probably floating around in the case, huh? And is the 2-stroke oil now mixed in with the transmission oil?

I'll order a block-off kit. How hard is it to get the cover to seal again once you've taken it off?

theres only a little hole where the gear goes into the case, thats where the blockoff plate will go. and no there is no two stroke oil mixed with the trans oil, it was blocked off and u premix, so theres no way it could get to the trans

red oil sounds like its comming from your crankcase, and that would be your engine oil.. not the autolube oil... and yeah, you should buy a blockoff kit to eliminate your oil injection if you are already premixing...

but im thinking you are leaking engine oil from your crankcase (NOT the oil that you mix with unless you are using one of a couple brands that aren't as common)

It had to be the autolube oil... It dripped until the reservoir ran dry. I checked on it in the garage every hour or so until it stopped. Reservoir empty-drips stopped. I'm just gonna get in there and take the gear off of the pump (if it hasn't eaten itself already).

i agree wit stryder917, red oil..u sure its not crankcase oil? if u overfilled your crankcase your going to have red oil all over the quad its a mess..crankcase..pipe..cylinder..a-arms.frame will all have oil. i overfilled mine once i thought i had other problems but it was to much oil in the crank..overflows at top of steering stem.

I suppose it could be, but then how do I explain the Autolube reservoir level going down, running dry, and the drips stopping? Where did that go? It wasn't even running; the oil was disappearing from the tank and the same color/scent oil was dripping from the case, behind which is the Autolube pump.

What do you guys use to plug up the holes in the rubber plug where the two hoses used to come through?

Those holes are filled with some Black RTV. All you need to do is squeeze it into the hoes, and let it cure... You are good to go.

As far as the "red oil" dripping on the floor. We used Spectro Premix oil at one time, and it was the same color. So they may have had something like that in the reservoir.
