i never have a problem with mine "hanging up" and never back up....just hold the front brake and mash it, she'll spin right around, and jump over the mud, LOL

I'd use them (and do use them), before I got a set I had my foot slip off the peg and hit the ground, managed to walk away with only a sprained ankle.

I just took mine off because I need new nets and I rode one time about 500 feet without them an I don't like not having them on there
